「何じゃ、こりゃ。MOTORHEADより騒々しくて速いな」

正直、リリース当時はこんな感じの受け止め方で、ギャグかジョークのネタになっていた。SLAYERも同様だったね。一聴して「これは凄い！」と大真面目に語る人は少なくとも、自分の周りにはいなかった。

明らかにこれまでと違うハードさ、スピードと重さを両立させたような新種のサウンドに聴き手が戸惑った。そんなところだと思う。

全体として、演奏は粗削りなんだけれど、只者じゃないと思わせる要素として、異彩を放っていたのはベースだろう。5のようなベース・ソロをフィーチャーした曲、ましてやインストなんて、当時（今もか）、お目にかかることはなかった。

こうして時間を経て改めて聴いて思うのは、ギター・リフが強力で普遍性を持っている事で、自然と身体が動かされる。ドラマ性や美しいメロディ、豊かな表現力を持った歌もないのに6分、7分台の楽曲を力技で聴かせる手法の凄さを理解するのに、自分は5年はかかったな。

リリース当時よりも、今の方が良く聴く作品。

　クリフバートンのファンである私にとってはメタリカのアルバムの中で一番良く聴くアルバム。クリフが参加しているアルバムで一番彼のベースプレイがよく聴こえるところが良いと思います（他のアルバムはベースに関心のある人でもなかなか聴き取りにくい）。歪ませまくり、ワウかけまくりのベースソロ曲もかっこよいです。彼も私が崇拝するベースヒーローのひとり。リッケンバッカーをやや低めにかまえてヘッドバンキングしながら弾きまくる姿にしびれまくりました。
　これ以後の彼らの作品と比べると荒削りな感じは否めませんが、ＮＷＯＢＨＭが好きな人にもアピールする作品ではないでしょうか。スピーディーだけども重く、かっこよいギターリフが詰まった名盤。クリフに興味のある人は必聴！。

ジェームズ、ラ-ズ、カークはもちろん今は亡きクリフバートンの技と魅力が詰まっているアルバム。初期のメタリカらしく未だNWOBHMの色が非常に濃く、とにかく速く激しい。
