『シャドウ･オブ･ユア･スマイル』で爽やかで、清々しいテナーを聴かせてくれたグラント･スチュワート。まだまだ若いと思っていたけれど、今回のアルバムはアーティストとして、いよいよ脂がのってきたな、と強く感じさせる出来栄え。ブルーノート･トリビュート（？）というコンセプトも簡潔で、そこにズバーンと真正面から向かい合っているのが、いかにもグラントらしくて気持ちがいい。｢黒いオルフェ｣の絶妙なこぶし回しは他者には真似できないグラントそのものだし、｢リトル･メロネー｣のブロウには思わず感激！！サイドメンとのバランスも抜群で、今年聴いたテナーものでは一番の完成度の高さかもしれない。

彼の美点は、ブローしない端正なプレイだと思う。そういう意味ではレスター=ヤングの曾孫みたいなものかも知れない。このへんは"Reeds And Deeds"と称してコンビを組んでいるエリック=アレキサンダーと好対照をなしている。
今作は、企画は悪くないですよ。BlueNoteテナー名曲集。"ミドル級テナー"ハンク=モブレーあたりはグラントとポジションが近いようで、良い味を出している反面、最後のロリンズ2曲を聴くと何となく「もう一押し」という感覚が拭えないのは、少し彼に厳し過ぎるだろうか？
ギターがバックに入っているが、『黒いオルフェ』だけにした方がよかったのでは。同曲以外では必然性を感じない。よって、星1つ減。

タイトルと選曲を見ただけで、サウンドが聴こえてくるような企画盤。

実際に聞いてみると、まさにそのまま。何の裏切りもないサウンドだし、テナーの音色も本当に直球勝負。プレイも本当に正直だなぁというぐらい真っ直ぐ。

前作のShadow of your smileのほうが、多少スリリングではあったし、選曲の意外性もあったので、そちらに軍配が上がるか。

グラントスチュワート氏には、この路線しかないのか？という余計な心配もしてしまう。
