Album Details

2008 WEA Flashback reissue of the 1976 album, In the Pocket which was the seventh album for singer-songwriter James Taylor. It contains the hit "Shower the People", one of Taylor's classic compositions, which climbed to number 22 on the Billboard charts on September 18, 1976. The song "Shower the People" was later covered by country music band 4 Runner on their 2003 album Getaway Car. 12 tracks.

『スウィート・ベイビー・ジェイムス』『マッド・スライド・スリム』の初期の傑作と、グラミーを受賞した『ＪＴ』の間に挟まれた『ゴリラ』、『イン・ザ・ポケット』は目立たないアルバムだが、私にとってこの２枚は思春期の思い出が一杯詰まっているかけがえのないアルバムだ。
中でも、『ゴリラ』のメキシコ風味から、一気に都会的になった『イン・ザ・ポケット』はグラミーを取った『ＪＴ』と同じくらい愛して止まない宝物だ。

そんな愛して止まないアルバムも、時間の経過と共に聴く頻度も少なくなっていたが、最近、ベイビー・フェイスの素晴らしいカバー集『ｐｌａｙｌｉｓｔ』で本アルバムの冒頭を飾る名曲『Shower The People』を聴いたのがきっかけで久々に取り出してみた。
『都会的』と書いたが、そんな雰囲気を醸しだすのはボビー・ウーマック作の７『Woman's Gotta Have It』
『最後のソウルマン』と呼ばれたボビー節から灰汁がうまく抜けた仕上がりで、名カバーといえる曲だ。ジェイムスは『ハンディー・マン（ジミー・ジョーンズ）』『ハウ・スィート・イット・イズ（マーヴィン・ゲイ）』『君の友達（キャロル・キング）』などのカバー・ヒットを持つが、自作曲のヒット曲は『ファイヤー＆レイン』くらいなのが意外なところだ。
リズムセクションはリー・スクラーとラス・カンケル。３『Money Machine』のリズム感は見事というしかない。特にラス・カンのドラムは秀逸。

プロデュースは『ゴリラ』に引き続き、名盤『リッキー・リー・ジョーンズ』と同じくレニー・ワロンカーとラス・タイトルマンの重役コンビ、エンジニアはリー・ハーシュバーグ、ストリングスはニック・デカロという錚々たるメンバーに、演奏陣はダニー・クーチ、ワディー・ワクテル、クラレンス・マクドナルド、ハーブ・ぺダーセン、ビクター・フェルドマン、デヴィッド・グリスマン。
ハーモニーはアート・ガーファンクル、デヴィッド・クロスビー、グラハム・ナッシュ、ヴァレリー・カーター、ボニー・レイット、アレックス・テイラー＆カーリーサイモンという豪華布陣。
それに珠玉の自作曲。ジェイムス節ともいえる６『Ｄａｄｄｙ’ｓ　Ａｌｌ　Ｇｏｎｅ』、名曲中の名曲１『Ｓｈｏｗｅｒ　Ｔｈｅ　Ｐｅｏｐｌｅ』、スティーヴィー・ワンダーの例のハーモニカが最高な９『Ｄｏｎ’ｔ　Ｂｅ　Ｓａｄ　’ｃａｕｓｅ　Ｙｏｕｒ　Ｓｕｎ　Ｉｓ　Ｄｏｗｎ』（共作）等曲の水準も高い。
どこか緊張感漂うところがたまらない『ＪＴ』とはまた違ったリラックス感を感じさせる仕上がりもまた良い。

ピーター・アッシャーから離れニューヨークでデヴィッド・スピノザと、また西に飛びバーバンクの音作りを経験する中で学んだ方法論を『ＪＴ』で実践した。
そんな事を誰かが言っていた。

蛇足だが、スーツを着こなしたジャケット写真は都会的な雰囲気だが、裏ジャケットを見ればそのスーツの下は『ゴリラ』のＴシャツで、ベルトなし。
しかもサンダルは履きのジェイムスは『本質は何も変わっていない』事を象徴しているようだ。
やはり、どこか垢抜けない。そんなところがたまらなくいいんだ。

ＪＴの最も好きなアルバムの中の１枚。次作77年「ＪＴ」がグラミー、ピーター・アッシャーも最優秀プロデューサーを獲得なので、本作「In the Pocket」や前作「Gorilla」は影に隠れがち。
しかし様々なルーツを洗練されたセンスで纏め上げたポップスという点では共通しているがＪＴらしさのあるフォーキーでリラックス感じやさり気無い隣のお兄ちゃん感じをもう少し残している「Gorilla」「In the Pocket」の方がより良い作品であると感じる。
また「Gollira」よりも更に都会的なエッセンスをわかり易く表現化しているのがこの「In the Pocket」だとも思う。
ブルース、ファンク、ゴスペル、カントリー、ジャズ、ラテンをＪＴらしい柔らかく温かいポップな感性で包み込んでいる。

David Crosby、Graham Nash参加作品。
名盤。
