ジャズとクラシックのトップトランペット奏者ウィントン・マルサリスとカントリーミュージックの人間国宝的存在のウィリー・ネルソンの共演という、普通なら思いつかない企画です。しかし考えてみれば、ウィリー・ネルソンは、以前からカントリー仲間のメール・ハガートやフレディー・パワースらとナッシュビルのステージでスイングジャズの曲を演奏していましたし、自らもオール・オブ・ミーなどのスタンダード曲ばかりを歌ったアルバムを出しています。黒人のゴスペルやブルースがジャズの要素を成したように、カントリーミュージックも白人のブルースのようなものでジャズとの融合がなされており、事実、ディキシーランドジャズはカントリーミュージックと共通するところがあります。前置きが長くなりましたが、こんなに楽しく、ほのぼのとした、且つ深みのある作品はめったにないでしょう。共演者二人がお互いをリスペクトし合いながら、楽しそうに、なごやかに演奏しているようすが目に浮かびます。1曲目のBright Lights Big Cityでは、早速ノリのよい演奏で後に続く作品をワクワクしながら期待してしまいます。Caldoniaはウッディ・ハーマンの演奏がポピュラーですが、これまた自然と足で床を踏み、からだが動いてしまいます。Stardustは今まで数え切れない数の録音がありますが、その中でベストになるでしょう。Basin Street Bluesはディキシーブルースの雰囲気がすごく出ていて渋いなあと関心させられます。My Bucket's Got a Hole in itではウィントンも歌っていますがなかなかいいです。という具合にどの曲もうならされる出来です。音楽のジャンルを超えたアメリカンミュージックの真骨頂です。是非購入してください。

今作はアメリカンミュージックである、ジャズとカントリーの代表格とも言えるウィントン・マルサリスとウィリー・ネルソンのコラボレート作品である。 こんな渋くて素敵な音楽を夜更け過ぎのクラブで演奏されたら堪らないだろう。その場に居合わせた人達が羨ましくてならない。 ウィリーが歌い、ギターを奏で、ウィントンがトランペットを吹く。音を文字で表現するのは難しいが、例えて言うなれば一般的な日本人が映画の世界などから想い浮かべる、ニューオーリンズ辺りのバーで毎夜繰り広げられている宴をステージで盛り上げている様なミュージックだ。 どうだろう?想像して頂けただろうか?ディズニーランドのウェスタン地区にも流れている「それ」である。 ともかく、演歌が日本的なミュージックだとすれば、彼らの音楽もまた、流行を超えたアメリカンミュージックなのである。 とにかく楽しもう!
