ここ数年、新譜を出す度に言われ続けているのが、「録音が汚い」「曲、特にリフがマンネリ」である。

シングルコイル+マーシャルの組み合わせではメタル系を演るには限界があるし、エフェクトをかければかけるほど汚くなる。
何年か前に日本で新日本フィルと作り上げたあの緻密で美しいフェンダーアンプの音が個人的には好きなのだが、バンドでハード演奏するにはパワー不足なのであろう。

ミキシングにRoy-zを持ってきたものの効果は余り無く、ベース強調、Drの音質は改善され良くなってはいるが、相変わらず肝心なギターは雑で汚さが残る、どこかで聴いたリフもあるが、スタイルを頑固として変えない一徹さの中で曲はよく書いたなと思う。

天才とは短命であるし、妥協も浮気もできないのだ。

その中で狂気の赤い悪魔へと昇華脱皮し得る段階的作品が本作ではないだろうか。

手グセを意識的に排除したPRIEST OF THE UNHOLY後半のサイクス風焼き尽くすソロを聴きながら、ふとそんな思いがよぎった。

正直言って、イングヴェイのアルバムは最近聴いてなかった・・・。
理由は、彼のアルバムがどれも北欧HR/HMと米国HR/HMの曲が半々という感じで、
ネオクラシカル調の曲を愛する筆者には不満だったから。
また、彼に触発された二番手・三番手のアーティストが、
本家本元以上に素晴らしいアルバムを出しているから、である。
しかし、今回のアルバムは違った。
冒頭のスピード・チューン1)DEATH DEALERに始まり、
「DEMON DRIVER」に似た6)BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR、
哀愁のメロディ満載のインスト7)CAPRICI DI DIABLO〜8)LAMENTなど、
ネオクラシカル調の名曲がズラリ！
ちなみに、4)RED DEVILはIRON MAIDENっぽいテイストが感じられるような・・・？
まあ、TIM”RIPPER”OWENSの歌声が曲調にマッチしてるかどうかは疑問だし、
もう少しキーボード目立たせてほしいと思うし、
どっかで聴いたような曲だなって印象も否定できないし・・・
あと、ジャケット裏面の愛車フェラーリとの２ショットはあまりに悪趣味だし。。
誰がこんなメタボ腹のオヤジのダサい写真を部屋に飾るだろうか？？笑
それはおいといて、このアルバムは初期の音楽性に通じるものがあり、
久しぶりの会心の作と言っていいだろう。

想像していた程、悪い物では無かったというのが率直な感想だ。勿論、８０年代の作品の様な強力な楽曲は無いし、音質もここ数作よりも向上しているとは言えないが、全二作にあった「アルバム全体を通して聴いているとダレる」という要素を排除し、ここ数年のイングヴェイの良い所を集約した作品という印象。今回よりティム・リッパー・オーウェンズが新Ｖｏだが、Ｖｏが交代してもそれほど新鮮味を感じさせないぐらい、今回も強烈なマルムスティーン節全開な内容だ。
