Album Details

An album of collaborations, a truly international, multi-artist project that grew from a series of "recording weeks" at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in the early 1990's. Many artists took part in writing songs, making music and being part of the musical community. Produced by Gabriel, Karl Wallinger (World Party) and Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Robbie Williams). This album comes in two different covers, this cover option is a photograph of a big Blue Ball on a hill whereas cover option 1 is a graphic design of a winking big blue ball.

あの"Up"から早いものでもう5年、久々のGabrielの新しい音を期待する際には若干肩透かしかもしれません。本作は彼が1991年から17年間に亘り主宰するGlobal Music Projectの報告書みたいな位置付けと思います。
Natacha Atlas, Papa Wemba, Sinead O'Connor, Marta Sebestyenなど、個性豊かで魅力的ななヴォーカリストをハイライトしながら、彼が惹かれてやまない世界各地の素晴らしい音をCD一枚に詰め込んだ作品です。"Us"、"OVO"、"Passion"、"Up"といった印象的な名盤の背景に、このプロジェクトでの数々の実験と体験があることを今更ながら知ることができました。
90年代以降、彼のソロ作品で聞かれる音の源がこの一枚でも随所に聞くことができますから、Gabril music元ネタ見本市を眺めるような楽しみ方も出来る貴重な一枚です。
ついでといっては何ですが、本作に登場するNatacha Atlas, Sinead O'Connor, Marta Sebestyenに興味を持たれた方は、彼女たちのソロ作品も魅力的なものが多いですから、一度お試し下さい。

2002年の_Up_以来のピーター・ゲイブリエルの新作ソロ・アルバムを期待していた人には少々残念な企画物で、ゲイブリエルのヴォーカルは3曲でしか聴けない。_OVO_よりもゲイブリエル色が控えめで、ナターシャ・アトラス（２曲目）やパパ・ウェンバ（３曲目）やシネイド・オコナー（６曲目）などの参加ミュージシャンがそれぞれに個性を発揮しながら作り上げた感じが強い。1991年から17年（足掛け18年）の歳月をかけて完成させた大プロジェクトということだが、正直なところもっと彼だけの世界を彼の歌声で聴きたいものだ。上述のアマゾンのレヴューではゲイブリエルの「集大成」とあるが、「これでいいのか、ゲイブリエル？」と訊きたくもなる。

タイトルの_Big Blue Ball_は明らかに地球を表しており、ジャケットの青一色の球体はあらゆる境界を越えて一つになった世界を表しているのだろう。だが、温暖化で陸地がすべて水没した地球の姿に見えなくもない。プロジェクトである以上はなんらかのコンセプトやメッセージがあるはずだが、このアルバム、せっかく日本盤を買っても、歌詞の日本語訳どころか、英語の歌詞も、英語以外の歌詞（なにしろ英語圏のミュージシャンだけではないのだ）も、全く載ってない。せっかくの大プロジェクトが、これでいいのか？ （その意味では、どうせ歌詞がついてないのなら輸入盤で十分ともいえる。）

なお、輸入盤では、“Cover Option 2”という、ジャケット違いのヴァージョンもあるが、中身は同じようだ。これでいいのか？

とはいえ、音楽的には決して悪くない。そんなわけで、ゲイブリエル関連の音源は何でもそろえたい人や、ゲイブリエル以外にも好きなミュージシャンが参加しているという人や、ゲイブリエルだけでなくワールド・ミュージック全般に興味のある人なら、買ってもあまり損したとは思わないだろう（あくまでも上述の問題点を承知した上で買うならだが）が、それ以外の人に関してはなんともいえない。

　80年代にアフリカン・ミュージックの咀嚼を始めたピー・ガブにとって、彼の音楽的進化/変化の歴史は、世界中に存在する多様な「ワールド・ミュージック」との出会いと消化の歴史だったのだと思う。様々なミュージシャンが曲を作り歌っているこの作品集は、そんなピーターによる「多様な世界/ワールド・ミュージック」との出会いの有り様が示されているようだ。このため、結果的に曲ごとに全く違うタイプの音楽が混在するアルバムとなっており、ソロ作の統一的な「ピー・ガブの音」を求めていたリスナーはこのバラバラ感に肩透かしを食らうかもしれない。「ピーターがプロデュースしたコンピレーション・アルバム」として聴くのが、本来的な聴き方なのだろう。

　良い曲が沢山集められた一方で、真新しい驚きは感じられないこの作品集は、ピーター自身と「ワールド・ミュージック」市場自体の成熟を象徴しているようにも感じられる。このアルバムにも参加しているディープ・フォレストのような「スピリチュアル」な「癒し」の音が世界的セールスを獲得する一方で、「世界」にはまだまだ市場に取り上げられていない「マイノリティの音楽」というものがある。例えば、ヨーロッパでアシュケナージの音楽を奏でることや、日本でアイヌが伝統音楽を歌うケースをイメージしてほしい。そういったマイノリティの音を演奏したり語ること自体がある種の政治性を帯びてしまう厄介なこの時代に、現在の「ワールド・ミュージック」という市場を振り返ると、毒を抜かれた音しか流通できない、何かしら巨大なセールス/消費の力が存在してしまっていることは否めないのではなかろうか。

　僕はピーターの作ってきた音楽や彼のポジティブな創作態度を支持する。でも、一方で彼が貢献してきた「ワールド・ミュージック」市場の拡大と定着過程は、ある種のフォーマット化を通した音楽的グローバニズムの成立過程としての側面もあったと思う。「いいアルバムだが手放しで誉められない」というこのジレンマは、「便利なんだけど困ったことも起こる」というグローバリズムに対する消費者のジレンマに共通する。そんなジレンマが評価の星を減らした。

　ピー・ガブの達成点は素晴らしい。でも、僕らはいつまでもここに安住してちゃマズイんじゃなかろうか。
