私が以前に入手したＤＶＤは画面がヨーロッパ・ビスタ・サイズで小さく、音声がモノラルだったが、本作ではそれら問題点が解消されて満足している（ワイドスクリーン、５．１ｃｈ）。キューブリックの５作品・ＤＶＤ１０枚組みＢＯＸの中では本作だけ欲しかった私は単品発売を歓迎する。映画で重要な役割を果すベートーベン第９を初め、ロッシーニのどろぼうかささぎ序曲にのって繰り広げられる乱闘、コミカルなセックス・シーンでのウィリアム・テル序曲、大臣登場場面でのエルガーの威風堂々といったクラシックの名曲の意表のついた起用、そしてジーン・ケリーの雨に歌えばを口ずさみながら行われる乱暴シーンは目に焼きついて忘れられない。これらの曲を使うことによって危険な美と映画的躍動感の刺激性が一層高まる。音楽が映像に付随するのではなく、音楽が映像をリードしている、まさに「映画を聴く（昔読んだ本のタイトル）」作品である。

テーマは人間の攻撃性は矯正し得るのか、矯正して自由を奪ってよいのか、という重いものだが、わかり易い寓話仕立だ。近未来の英国が舞台で、原作通り英語が奇妙な単語まじりになっているという設定だが、最近の新語の登場傾向、少年犯罪の増加等、今日の日本の状況をも予言している。主人公が押し入る室内のインテリアは、７０年代に予測した未来図という逆説的な懐かしさに彩られている点が面白い。

映像特典も充実しており、本作が人を惹きつける理由を多角的に分析するとともに、原作執筆秘話、原作と映画の関係、ミック・ジャガーが主演候補だったこと、雨に歌えばがひらめいた瞬間、作品公開後の反響、そして英国で２５年間も上映されなかった等、初めて知ったことが多い。そして本作の主人公に彼以外考えられないマルコム・マクドウェルの役者人生一代記からは彼の家庭人としての一面も知ることができる。

ワーナーの商売には賛否両論あるようですが、未見のドキュメンタリだけでもファンは 3,000数百円出す価値はあるでしょう。。とくにマルコムファンには結構楽しめるドキュメンタリでした。画質や音質も上がってますので、過去に同じ内容ジャケ違いで2枚買ってしまった私でも満足できました。8,000円とかだと買いませんけどね。
ワーナー商法＝国内メーカより定価設定が低い。（けど・・・）こういった企画で国産アニメなら8,000円必至でしょう。
このシリーズ2001年もそれなりに満足しました。シャイニング、アイズ・ワイドも買って見ようかなと。

発売の際に買えず、レターボックス版で我慢為ていたら、やっと再発!嬉しい限りです!
アレックスがやっていた様に、取り寄せ用紙を店員に渡して受取り、ポータプルプレーヤー&イヤホンでルドウィヒ・バン作曲の第九を聞く。目頭が沸々と熱くなり、あの興奮が蘇りました!ワイドサイズの威力って凄いわ。
ポスターデザインのポストカードも封入、レターボックス版にも収録為れていたあの斬新な予告編も収録。
但し不満が、日本語字幕です。あの直訳部分はいいとして、あの態とっぽい手書き効果字幕に意識がいってしょうがない。惜しい!
この商法を批判する人もいますが、個人的にはかなり嬉しい再発だったので字幕問題は無視して☆5つ!

警告
女性、お子様には不向きな場面満載ですのであまりお薦めは為ません。
