数多のシンガーの中で、ここまでHip HopとR&Bの境界線を気持ちいいくらいに泳ぎ切ったアルバムは少ないかもしれない。泳ぎきって、完全に『型』として整えたアーティストといえば、Usher。女性ではAdriana EvansやLediciなど数多くいますが、彼女の魅力はなんといっても声質。イングランドの湿り気のある気候の影響なのか、ある種の『湿り』を感じます。そういう意味では、どこか日本の宇多田ヒカルさんに類似している箇所もこのアルバムの中で見つけられるはず。

多種多様なプロデューサー及びアーティストのフィーチャリングによって、エステルのこだわりが感じられる一枚。購入して損はしない名盤です。In the Rain、Come Overは中でもお勧めの曲。最近リリースのMariah CareyのE=MC2もその典型的な例かもしれないけど、EstelleはMariahと違ってJazzyなNo Subtitute Loveによって多種多様なジャンルの曲をこのアルバムで楽しませてくれる。Mariahほどの歌唱力はないものの、少しかすれたノスタルジックな声に惹かれます。そして、そのどこかノスタルジックな歌声は、往年のジャズ歌手であるElla Fitzgeraldを思わせます。アメリカ・日本ではまだ知名度は高くなく、チャートの上位にくることはないけども、故郷イングランドを含むヨーロッパ各国では爆発的なヒット曲『アメリカン・ボーイ』は必聴です。イングランド生まれのEstelleの持つアーティストとしての資質の発芽が楽しみです。

　デビュー作で既に大器の片鱗はのぞかせていたが，ここまで大化けするとは。本場・アメリカでも大ブレイクし，一気にスターダムへ。Estelleの2ndは勢いを感じさせる会心作だ。
　「1980」や「Hey Girl」などの秀作もあったが，総花主義的で玉石混交の感は否めなかったデビュー作に比べ本作では音楽性のベクトルも統一され，聴きやすくなった。
表面上はタイトで尖がったビートやラップ･パートを交えた今風の音ながら，バックグラウンドにはメロウでモダンな８０年代ファンクと，素朴で心癒される７０年代ソウルが交互に顔をのぞかせる。スレイブやＪ.ホーキンスをサンプリングしたファンキーでタイトなトラックがカッコいい「Wait A Minute　(Just A Touch)」と，ハッピーでブライトなミッドテンポ「No Substitute Love」という冒頭の２曲がその典型。ラブ･アンリミテッドの早回しサンプリングが印象的な「In The Rain」では，思わずステップを踏みたくなる夢見心地のメロディーが心地良く，エンディングを飾るタイトル曲では，タイトでたたみかけるようなラップ・パートから愁いを帯びたメロディーのサビへのドラマティックな展開がいい。Cee-Loを起用したポップな「Pretty Please　（Love Me）」はモータウン・サウンドを想起させる。
とはいえ，本作もハイライトは，ジョン･レジェンドが参加した「You Are」か。メロウで流麗で夢見心地なバラードは，素朴で心やすまる７０年代ソウルの空気が漂う良質の一品。
これは必聴！
