前々作の"DAMNATION"の路線を更に深く極めつつ、本来の暴虐サウンドもさぼらずにって感じの素晴らしい作品。
ヴァイオリンなどのストリングスやフルートなどの今までに無かった生楽器の導入や、今まで以上のシンセの出現に戸惑い盲目になり、本作の本質が見えなくなるかもしれません。でもちゃんと聞けばわかります。いつも以上のオーペスに。

北欧の暗黒神「Opeth」による通算9枚目のフルレンスアルバムです。2008年発売。前作「ゴースト・リヴァリーズ」が2005年リリースですから、約3年ぶりの新譜になります。例によって日本盤のみボーナストラックが1曲追加されています。

ご存知のように前作リリース後にバンドの屋台骨を支えてきたマーティン・ロペス（dr）とピーター・リンドグレン（g）の2名が脱退してしまいますが、ドラムには新たにマーティン・アックス・アクセンロット、ギターにフレドリック・オーケソンが加入しています。当然、特にドラムの交代が気になるところですが、新任のマーティン・アックス・アクセンロットのプレイはどちらかというと、メタル色が濃厚で、ソリッドでタイト。前任者が流動的で変則プレイを得意としていたのに対し、アックス・アクセンロットのプレイは直線的・鋭角的でスピーディー。したがってリズムセクションとしてはとっつきやすくなった印象を受けます。

肝心の楽曲ですが、相変わらずのプログレとデス、静と動、叙情性と邪悪、アコースティックとメタルなどのお得意の「二律背反的サウンド」は健在で、新メンバーによる新たなスパイスが加味されたという感じで、デビュー作からのファンを十分に納得させるもの。1曲目の「Coil」という曲はいきなり、オーカーフェルトとナタリー・ロリヒスという女性ボーカルのツインボーカルという新境地を見せてかなり面食らいますが、あとはお得意のOpethサウンドがこれでもかと展開しています。その意味ではややマンネリ感がないわけでもありませんが、予定調和的な展開とはいえ、新作のたびにさまざまな手法を駆使しながら表現する力量はいつも感心させられます。１度ではなく、何回も聴き込んでいきたくなるそんな作品です。

スペシャルエディションとしてボーナストラックがさらに加わった2枚組が発売される予定ですが、知る人ぞ知るジミヘンフォロワー、ロビン・トロワーの曲をカバーするあたり、彼らの持ち芸の多様性を感じます。また、ジャケットデザインも別になるようです。こちらも楽しみです。

前作「Ghost Reveries 」にて、その濃密な完成度からさらに多くのファンを増やし、
いよいよ快調に世界進出を果たしつつあるこのバンド。ギターとドラムを交代した今作は、
冒頭のアコースティカルな女性Vo入りの曲から意表をつかれる。
つづく、2曲目以降はこれまでの彼らのサウンドを基盤にしつつも、
ギターフレーズのメロディやシンセワークなどには、今まで以上の聴きやすさを感じる。
そして、よりブルータルな突進力と、ゆるやかな叙情パートでのメリハリをつけながら、
山あり谷ありで長曲を聴かせる手法は、さらなる円熟の域に達しつつある。
ミカエルのデス声もいっそう激しく咆哮し、マイルドなノーマルヴォイスとのギャップで
曲におけるコントラストをこれまで以上に見せつけ、作り込まれた世界観を描いてゆく。
シンフォニックに聴かせるシンセワークは、ときにプログレ的ですらあり、
ツインギターの旋律とともに、もの悲しくも薄暗い叙情美を作り出す。
これまでの彼らのアルバムからすると、北欧らしい暗黒感は薄まり、
この70年代プログレ的な質感の再現にはやや作り物めいた感じもするが、
逆を返せば、その「作られた質の高さ」を堂々と提示して見せている作品ともいえる。
メロディックな聴き安さは確信犯的で、プログレッシブな展開力を趣味的に披露しつつ、
デスとしての激しさも挿入して見せる。これをさらりと作ってしまうこのバンドはやはり凄い。
