　シューマンの管弦楽曲は専門家からはあまり良い評価を受けてはいない。諸々の声部が混濁し、透明感のある立体的な響きが要求される管弦楽ではそのことが致命的だからである。けれども、四つの交響曲はシューマン独自のロマンティシズムに溢れたドイツ・ロマン派を代表する楽曲に変わりはない。
　クレンペラーはドイツ・ロマン派の楽曲を得意とする偉大な指揮者であるが、私は聴く前はいささかシューマンには会わないと先入観を持っていた。メンデルスゾーンでも大変な名演を残しているぐらいだから、シューマンも当然素晴らしいと思うのはしごく当たり前だが、シューマンはメンデルスゾーンとは異なり、内から溢れ出るロマンを何とか構成に収めようとした不器用な作曲家であるから、構成を重んじるクレンペラーの芸術感とは相反すると思ったからである。
　テンポは二曲とも緩徐楽章を除いて全体的にゆっくりで、常ながらインテンポの格調高く、スケールの巨大な演奏だが、「ライン」交響曲はいささかリズムが重く、もたれる。これは好みが分かれる演奏だろう。一方、構成とロマンが見事に融合した「交響的幻想曲」とも言われる第四番は大変な名演である。フルトヴェングラーの演奏とは極にある、極めて堅固な構成と硬質なロマンティシズムに溢れ、いささかの隙もない。この曲は、ベートーヴェンの「運命交響曲」を模したものだとよく指摘されるが、ベートーヴェンを得意としていたクレンペラーならではのベートーヴェン的な演奏である。この曲の演奏の最右翼と言っても過言ではないだろう。
　クレンペラーのシューマンは他の指揮者で聴いた演奏とは全く異なっている。初めて聴く人にとっては「眼(耳)から鱗」であろう。
