Despite less than a year later and solely on the strength of their live shows, the Beach Boys garnered Band of the Year award in Rolling Stone magazine, 1973's In Concert is, unaccountably, rarely afforded much in the way of retrospective applause. This is probably due to the all-too-conspicuous absenteeism of madcap mentor/cult figurehead Brian Wilson at the time of the recording and, of course, because Pet Sounds, not unduly, remains the media's first choice for critical column filler. But as live albums go, this is a bona-fide classic of the genre from a rock band (yes, that's right--take a listen to the rubber-burning joyride through "Fun Fun Fun" or the proto-Charlatans hammond-organ groove of "Sail on Sailor", or the gleeful folk-rock stomp through "Sloop John B") at the peak of their performing powers. The utterly matchless vocal serenity of Carl Wilson alone makes this the kind of disc that desert islands were invented for. --Kevin Maidment

このライプアルバムは買いです。まず利便性のことから言えば、
「カール＆パッションズ~/オランダ」から６曲入っています。
しかもその内２曲は７０年代の代表曲「セイルオンセイラー」と「マセーラ」
であり、カールの傑作「ザ・トレイラー」もあります。演奏もすばらしい。
もしちょっとマイナーな作品である「カール＆パッションズ~/オランダ」に
手を出しにくい、という人がいれば迷わずこっちを買うべきです。
しかもライブの興奮も味わえる。一石二鳥。買いです。

そしてライブのそのものも素晴らしい。ルーズになるべき時は徹底的に
ルーズに、そして引き締める時はタイトな演奏とコーラスでびしっと
引き締める。緩急の聞いた良質のライブです。しかもあのペットサウンズ
から４曲も入ってる。これが本当に美しい。いかに原曲が美しいものであるか
がよくわかるし、カールの熱唱が良い。こんなにうまいシンガーはなかなか
いません。でも結局は「サーフィン・ＵＳＡ」や「ヘルプミーロンダ」などの
初期の名曲群の盛り上がりが最高。とくにラストのファンファンファンなんかは、
人生いやな事なんか一つもなかった、と言い出さんばかりのはじけっぷり。
迷うことなんかありません。買いましょう。

ビーチボーイズはBrian Wilsonが近頃神格化されてきていて
正直うん？と思う。
ビーチボーイズをここまでもたせたのは彼以外のメンバーが
それこそドサ回りのように開き直って、なつかしメドレーの
ライブをやってきたからだということが忘れられているような気がする。
このアルバムだって、それこそ単なるヒットナンバーを集めた

ライブだ。でもいいじゃないか。このCD、車で聞いていてはっと
気づけば大声で一緒に歌っている自分に気づく。
気持ちいいんですよ、やっぱり。買って一緒に歌おう！

　サーフィンバンド、懐メロバンドと見ている人に聴いて欲しいアルバムです。

　ペットサウンズ以降のビーチボーイズのアルバムを聴いてきて、ほとんど最後にこのアルバムを手に入れたのですが、どのアルバムでも聴けないグルーヴにびっくりしました。

　黒人メンバーを二人加えたことによって、完全にノリがソウルフルになってます。ただ、闇雲に黒人だからというわけではなく、二人の新メンバーは60年代後半のラフでスワンプロック的なアプローチのバンドを志向していたからか、骨太なアメリカンロックになっているのです。

　ブライアンのシンフォニックなサウンド、キャロルケイやハルブレインなどの誇り高きLAミュージシャンによる演奏も素晴らしいですが、渋いクランチサウンドのギター＋ハモンドとローズのキーボードサウンドとタメのあるドラムが、当時の最新曲をやっても、ヒットナンバーを演奏しても、どれも最高にしてくれます。

　特に耳を奪われるのはドラムです。デニスの存在は間違いなくビーチボーイズにはなくてはならないですが、このドラムを聴くと、リッキー・ファターにずっと叩いてほしかったと思わざるを得ません。
