クラフトワークが世界的に有名になったきっかけはもちろん「アウトバーン」の発表でしょう。しかし「アウトバーン」の当時の世間一般での受け止められ方は正当なものではなく、ゲテモノ扱いでした。純粋に音楽を認められたわけではなかったのです。
そして「放射能」を経て本作「ヨーロッパ特急」と相成るわけですが、この「ヨーロッパ特急」、お聴きになった方にならおわかりいただけると思うでしょうが、まったく無駄のない音楽作りがなされています。「ここまで音を絞ったら曲にならない」というぎりぎりのところまで、音を削って、絞っている。彼らの力量であれば、シンセをふんだんに使い、ヴァリエーションのあるアルバム作りもできたはずです。
ではなぜこの「ヨーロッパ特急」で、シンプルな音楽作りをしたか。ジャーマン・プログレッシヴ・ロックのジャンルで、ノイ！というユニットがかつてそうしていたからだ、と、私は勝手に推測しています。クラフトワークとノイは親しい関係にあり、ノイのメンバーがクラフトワークのアルバムでドラムを叩いていたこともありました。
そして、シンプルであるにもかかわらず、この「ヨーロッパ特急」は素晴らしい。シンプルなだけに聞きやすく、またシンプルであるにもかかわらずポップである。「トランス・ヨーロッパ・エクスプレス」から「メタル・オン・メタル」の流れは素晴らしい。
「アウトバーン」「放射能」を聴いて、もっとクラフトワークを聴きたいという方は、是非聴いてみてください。
