5.0 out of 5 stars ボールト最後の力強く、スケールの大きな「惑星」, 2008/9/14
　ボールトは生涯で「惑星」を5回録音しているが、このディスクの演奏はその最後にあたるものである。この組曲の実質的な初演を行なっただけあって、もはやすべて手の内にあると言って良いほどの出来栄えである。
　この組曲は、近代の管弦楽法を最大限活用して創造された作品であり、演奏効果のスペクタクルも他の現代音楽よりも多彩である。「木星」などは勝手に詞がつけられて、日本でポピュラーな人気を博しているのは周知の事実である。けれども、やはり原曲を聴かなければその魅力を真に理解したとは言えないだろう。
　作曲者ホルスト自身も「これらの曲は、諸惑星の占星術的な意義が着想のきっかけにはなっていますが、その中には標題音楽は全然ありません。そして、同じ名前の神話の神ともなんの関係もないのです」と述べている事から、何か文学的解釈をしようとすること自体誤りであろう。ただ、各曲に付けられたサブ・タイトルが唯一の手引きとなる「象徴」である。
　ボールトの演奏はブラームスを得意としていただけあって、力強く、スケールの大きなものであり、しかし豪華絢爛にはならない。イギリス人特有の抑制されたバランス感覚がうまく働いているのかもしれない。「火星」などは極めて力強いが、「金星」の穏やかな甘美も気品があって素晴らしい。しかし、私が唯一惜しむらくは、この組曲中最も大規模で構成の変化に富んでいる「木星」があまり良くないことである。リズムが重く、例えば二番目の主題のあたりでアンサンブルが少し乱れている。冒頭の部分も何か重々しく、晴れやかな気分が出ていない。中間部はたっぷりと歌っていてその点は良いのだが、録音のせいもあるのかその他の部分よりも相対的に音量が小さく、スケールが小さくなってしまっているように思う。他の曲が素晴らしいだけに、この点は残念である。ただ、人によって感じ方は異なるだろうから、この方が好ましいと思う方もおられるだろう。しかし、全体から見れば、演奏は一時代を築いた巨匠の見事な腕が冴え渡っている歴史に残る演奏であることは疑い得ない。

　結論から言えば、ボールトの惑星はＮフィルハーモニア盤がベストである。
この曲に求められるのは、ベートーヴェンやブラームスのような人間臭いドラマではなく、悪い意味ではないが、極端に言えばＢＧＭ的効果音の要素も強いと思う。　この最新のロンドン盤は 行間から人間臭が垣間見え、リスナーの想像力＝ファンタジーの入り込む余地がない。
