While his recording career only lasted a little more than six years ('66-'71), Duane Allman's playing was heard not only with the Allman Brothers Band, but on a variety of important records by other artists as well. Hence this posthumous 1972 double-album collection, which--besides five Allman Brothers tracks--includes many memorable solos by the distinctive slide guitarist from sessions at the fabled Fame and Muscle Shoals studios. 50歳になろうかという自分が何故今もROCKかと言えば、この1枚と出会ったからで、当然Allmansを聞きはじめた時にはDuaneはこの世の人ではなかった。at FillmoreもBoz Scaggsも持っていたが、もうここが最後のDuaneの録音だった。Muscle ShoalsのセッションからLaylaを経て死の直前のDicky　Bettsとのデュオまで時系列に編集された曲に捨て曲は無い。発売から32年の間、店頭から消える事の無かった裏名盤だ。ボーカルの間奏に響く魂の旋律を聴いて欲しい。超絶の技巧には無い一音に籠められた悪魔の囁き、目を閉じてひたすらギターの旋律に耳を傾けよう。Robert RandolphやDerek Trucksがトリビュートする気持ちが理解できる。オリジナル盤のバス釣りに興じるDuaneのジャケットも捨てがたいのだが・・・

このアルバムは”デュエイン・オールマン”という不世出のギタリストの足跡をまとめた追悼の作品である。アワグラスからマッスルショールズセッションを始め、かのレイラ・セッション、オールマンブラザース時代を含めた愛情たっぷりの仕上がりだ。ゆえにマニアックな仕上がりで、サウンドは泥臭く受け付けない人も多いのではないか。しかし好き物にはたまらない仕上がりで南部系シンガーソングライター、サザンソウル、スワンプロックの偉大なミュージシャンを知るための教科書のような物だ。私はコレで勉強し深く、深ーくハマってしまった。白人ギタリストながら黒人ミュージシャンと互角以上にわたりきり、特にクラレンス・カーターとのセッションでのスライドは三本の指に入るであろう名演だ。テクニックのみならず、強いこだわりと愛情を感じる”サザンロックの父”の遺作。出来れば体を清め、精神統一して聞いていただきたい。決して聞き流す類のアルバムではない。

これほどのギタリストが短い人生で演奏してきた曲達、一曲たりとも聴き逃すものか。
