優しい歌声のハーモニー、フィドルの音色、小気味よいパーカッション、すべて心地いい。溢れる郷愁感、懐かしいメロディだけで涙が出る。

しかし、詩が良すぎる。「大宴会」や「静かな家」には純粋に泣かされたが、他もまた凄い。こんなに音は優しいのに、内包する毒は強烈。真心ブラザーズか。まるでパンクだ。
なのにスッと聴けてしまうのだからすごい。

「黙っておれば、このごくつぶし」
「テメーの都合で使うなよ」
「ここは天国、いや地獄」
「文句があるなら 言ってみろよ」

言葉の端を拾ってみれば、結構きついものも多い。人間の醜さ(或いはマヌケさ)や社会問題に食ってかかるようなメッセージを持っている。あらゆる傷も見逃さず、自分自身の闇とにらめっこさせられる。
なのに純粋な音楽としての楽しさを見失っていない。

たくさんの人に聴いてほしいけど、自分だけの密かな宝物にしたいアルバム。

“癒し系のフォークデュオ”

そんな風に評されることが多かったであろう彼ら2人だが、
今回のアルバムはそんなイメージを見事なまでに振り切っている。
ただの“癒し系”にはとどまらない
そんな彼らの意気込みが、1曲目の「バビロン」を聴けばわかる。
そこには、ただの“癒し系のフォークデュオ”ではなく、
ロックバンド、しかも“単純にカッコよいロックバンド”の佇まいをした彼らがいる。

それだけではない。

くるりの岸田も唸らせるほどの彼らの音楽的背景の奥深さを感じさせる
「大宴会」「荒神さま」「街の灯」。
前作『道はつづく』のハイライト「おかえりなさい」を彷彿とさせる
名曲「透明人間」「白夜」。

これまでの彼らのファンも納得のしっとりナンバー
「静かな家」などなどなど。

嘘偽りなく過去最高傑作だと思う。

一生聴き続けていけるんだろうなぁと思う1枚。

どう過小評価しても名盤としか言いようがない。
「やさしい」とか「あったかい」とか、
確かにそれもある、けれどもほんの少しだ。
勝手な解釈だが、今回彼らは、
働くことを、都市の開発を、ニートのことを、オタクのことを、
生きる幸せを、切なさを、辛さを、そして死ぬことを、生々しく歌っている。
時に心をえぐるような、残酷で厳しい言葉もある。
今の時代、どんなアーティストも厳しい言葉なんて、投げかけてくれない、
こんな時代だから、暖かさや、やさしさなんて少しでいいのだ、
変なプライドなんか捨てて、素直にまっすぐ生きたい。
社会にボロボロにされても、めげない強さが足りない。
音楽を聴いて、こんなに打ちのめされたのは初めてだ。
こんなにも社会的で、生きる力をくれる、人間臭い音楽はなかなか無い。
日本の音楽史に残る最強の1枚、ありがとうハンバートハンバート。
