Album Description

Weezer - one of the biggest and most influential bands of the last decade will for the third time in its six-album history release a self-titled album. The new album will hit streets on June 24 through DGC/Interscope Records. To distinguish it from the other eponymous albums it's being referred by people as "The Red Album." Comprised of sessions produced by Rick Rubin, Jacknife Lee and the band itself, the album is adventurous and undeniable Weezer pop-rock.

The first single, the quirky and catchy "Pork and Beans," was recorded under the watch of the Irishman Lee and will soon be a Weezer classic.

　先行シングルの「Pork and Beans」がラジオで流れていて、昔からのweezerファンである僕にとっては今回のアルバムは期待できる！！との思いからまっさきに購入しました。雑誌にも最高傑作とうたわれていて、こころがたかぶっていたまま聴いたところ・・・。うーん、何と評価してよいやら。今回新しいことにチャレンジしている曲が多いのですが、何かしっくりこない。アルバムとしての統一感がなく、やけにとっちらかった印象が否めません。他の凡百バンドに比べれば個々の楽曲のクオリティは高いです。でも僕が待っているいわゆるweezer節ではないのです。リヴァース自身はプライベートも充実し、最高の状態みたいだから、そう考えると昔のナードな頃に戻らない限りは、あのひりひりした感じは出ないんだろうなあ。
　あと今回は、日本盤のボーナストラックにＢＯＡのカバーを日本語で歌っているのが入っているのだけれど、これがトホホ感たっぷり。無理していれる必要ないだろうというシロモノ。ＣＤ聴いて目が点になったのは初めてです。ある意味必聴。
　悲しいかな、それでも待っています。あの頃のweezerを。

大傑作ファースト、復活作サードに続く三枚目のセルフタイトルでの新作。
やはりブルーとピンカートン好きの自分にとって今回もあまり期待はしていなかったが、
統一感が無くとっちらかった印象。
痛快なリフとキャッチーなメロの１、クイーンっぽいけど新しいweezerって感じの２、
初期weezerが帰ってきたような３、切ないメロ全開の４と前半は結構楽しめたけど、それ以降があんまり･･･
確かにレッチリみたいな５やポップな６も良いけど、これだと前作の方がまだ良かった気がする。
そして、他のメンバー作の７，８，９が残念だった。
ぜんぜんweezerっぽくないメロだし、やはりソングライターはリヴァースだけで良かったんじゃないか･･･
今までのアルバムより泣きメロが無くなっていてもう新しいweezerなのかなと感じました。

まぁこのアルバムは２曲目がほんと素晴らしいし、３曲目も大好きなので星四つにしたいと思います。
あとボートラのメリクリはけっこうweezerの雰囲気出てますよ。
リヴァースも上手いとはいえないけど切ない声が曲の良さを引き出しています。

本国では先行シングル「ポーク・アンド・ビーンズ」のおかげもあり、ウィーザー至上、最も高い初動セールスを記録した今作。

特に１から４まではどれをシングルにしてもＯＫなほどよくできている。

だが、アルバム全体の評価は賛否両論といったところ。（ここでのレビューの点差を見るとよく分かると思いますが・・・）

特に初期２枚のウィーザーファンからするとあのヒリヒリ感や焦燥感が感じられない今作はそれだけで微妙なものだと思う。

またウィーザー特有のメロディを求めている人にとっても微妙だろう。
リヴァース以外のメンバーが筆や歌をとった曲があることもあってウィーザー版のホワイトアルバムのようになっている。（７，８，９など）

よく言えばバラエティに富んでおり、新しいウィーザーと捉えられるが、悪く言えば、全体的にまとまりがなく、とっちらかったアルバムだとも言える。

乱暴に言うなら、ウィーザーのことをあまり知らないリスナーにとっては名盤。
ウィーザー（特に１ＳＴ、２ＮＤ）に思い入れがあるリスナーにとっては駄作ということなのだろう。

事実、このアルバムは好セールスを世界で記録しているが、リスナーからの評価はいまだに賛否が激しい。
だが、そうした意見に対し、リヴァースはこう言っている。
「未だに１stや2ndを良いって言ってくれるのは、すごくうれしいんだけど、もうあの頃のような感情で曲作りをしようって言う気はないんだ。
だって、家族も居るのにイン・ザ・ガレージやタイヤード・オブ・セックスを歌ってもリアリティがないだろ？
ああいう思春期の感覚を共有するってすごく美しい感覚だったけどね。
でも、今はただハッピーでよくできたポップソングを作りたいだけなんだ。
だから、賛否があるのはよく分かるよ。
実際、今のウィーザーと昔のウィーザーは別人だろうから。
でも、僕の中で音楽に対しては昔も今も変わらず誠実なんだけどね。」
