'70年に発表された2作目。どの曲も秀作揃いで特に(1)(2)(3)(5)はロックのクラシックにもなる名曲。ほとんどの曲はリーダーでもある、元クリームのプロデューサーだったフェリックスパパラルディのペンによるもの。ギターリストの巨漢、レスリーウェストは卓越したテクニックは持っていないし、フレーズもそんなに多くはないが、味のあるギターを弾く。こんな凄いバンドが沢山あった'60年代後半から'70年代前半はまさにロックの黄金期であった。Mountainを聴くならこの作品か次の３作目の「ナンタケットスレイライド」がお薦めだろう。

mountainがバンドとして形が出来上がった実質的にはバンドとしてのデビューアルバム。
あの名曲「ミシシッピークイーン」が映画「バニシング・ポイント」で使われ広く知られるようになった出世作的作品。とてもバラエティに富んだ楽曲が並ぶ。中でもジャック・ブルース作の「想像されたウエスタンのテーマ」はmountainならではのアレンジで構成されている名曲中の名曲。「never in my life」は後のライブでは定番のナンバー。「for yasgur's farm」は
mountainが出演したウッドストックが開催された農場の事をテーマにした曲。mountainはこのアルバムでタイトル「climbing」通りに頂点へと登りつめて行く。
