1971年に出たこの_Tapestry_(邦題『つづれおり』）は、ポピュラー・ミュージック史上に残る名盤である。まだ聴いたことのない人は、ぜひ聴いてみてもらいたい。どこかで聴いたことのある曲が次々出てくるのに驚くはずだ。しかも、それが他人のカヴァーではなく、まさにこの人がオリジナルなのだ。

彼女の歌はジャンルの垣根を越えて様々なミュージシャンに歌われているが、そのように多くの人を惹きつける理由の一つは、彼女の歌がただ甘ったるいだけのラヴ・ソングとは一線を画しているからかもしれない。ピアノを主体としたシンプルな曲のイメージがあるが、彼女の曲にはジャズやブルースっぽいフィーリングもあり、歌声も、いわゆる「美声」ではなく、穏やかに心に触れてくる一方でソウルフルでもあり、いうなればカーペンターズのカレンとジャニス・ジョプリンを掛け合わせたような感じで味わい深い。

今回の“Legacy Edition”は、オリジナル・アルバムの他に、1973年と76年のライヴ音源からこのアルバムの収録曲をオリジナル・アルバムの収録順に並べたディスクがついた2枚組である。ただし、“Where You Lead”（邦題「地の果てまでも」）のライヴ音源は入っていない。この曲は、このアルバムの後その歌詞に不満を感じるようになってライヴであまり歌わなくなり、その後歌詞を作り変えたとのことで、そのような事情でここには入れられなかったのだろう。また、オリジナル・アルバムは、オリジナルと同じ曲目・曲数で、通常盤や紙ジャケ版でのボーナス・トラック（“Out in the Cold”を含む）は入っていない。“Legacy Edition”ということでこのアルバムの歴史的意義を重視して、あくまでもこのアルバムの特別版ということにこだわったのかもしれない。

今回のエディションは「デジタル･リマスター音源」となっているが、昨年の来日に合わせてやはりリマスター音源の紙ジャケ日本盤が出ており、それを買った人は悩むだろう。だが、今回のエディションの帯（日本盤の場合）や解説は初出時のものではない。その代わり、今回のための写真やライナー・ノーツもある。それに、紙ジャケを既に買ってしまった人は、上記の「アウト・イン・ザ・コールド」はそれに収録されているのだから、今回のエディションに収録されていないからといって特に問題はないはずだ。紙ジャケはかつてのＬＰ発売時の姿をしのぶためのものと考えて、今回のエディションはライヴ音源をはじめ今回ならではの楽しみ方をすればよいのではないだろうか。なお、「日本盤は高いし、自分には日本語解説はいらない」という人には、ずっと安い輸入盤がおすすめ。それなら、紙ジャケ日本盤と合わせても、普段日本盤で２枚組のＣＤを買う場合の値段とあまり変わらないはずだ。（なお、私は、自分の好きなミュージシャンへの敬意として、海賊盤に手を出す気はない。）

私はつづれおりのヒットをリアル・タイムで体験していないが、余韻は記憶にある。Ｍ１、３、7等をラジオで耳にし、エアチェックしたテープをよく聞いたものだ。７０年代の女性シンガー・ソングライターの活躍の嚆矢となったつづれおりの価値は不滅。この大成功がなければ、カーリー・サイモン等のデビューやジョニ・ミッチェルの活動の躍進、あるいは日本での荒井由美のデビュー等、以後の音楽シーンの展開は随分違ったものになったと思う。レコード又はＣＤを買おうと思いつつ今に至ったが、この度スタジオ録音版のディスク１と、７３・７６年のピアノ弾き語りライヴからディスク１と同じ曲（１曲を除く）を選び同じ順に並べたディスク２との組合せをデジタル・リマスター音源で入手できたのは幸運だった。ディスク２には、最初に彼女がプロデューサー、ルー・アドラーのためにプレイしたときの様子に近いものをリスナーに、という意図がある。素朴だが、７０年代のキャロル全盛期のピアノ弾き語りは、歌に込められた説得力と与える感動の点で素晴らしい。既に過去のＬＰまたはＣＤのエディションで本作の曲の歌詞の訳を知っている人又は対訳なしで英詞の意味を理解できる人は輸入盤でいいだろう。そうでない人は、歌詞は曲の世界を知るのに不可欠なので、日本盤がお薦めだ（もっとも、シンプルでゆっくり歌われる曲が多いので、対訳なしでかなり意味が掴めるが）。それに日本語解説もＬＰ製作の背景、各曲がどのように作られ、誰が録音に参加し、その後辿った運命、誰がカバーしたか、といった情報が豊富だ。恥ずかしいことだが、ディスク１・Ｍ９にジョニ・ミッチェルが参加していることを私は初めて知った（輸入盤でもわかるだろうが）。この万感を込めてスローに歌われるＭ９は、名曲揃いの本作でもハイライトと言える。以上、私は記念碑的作品に光を当てるこの好企画を高く評価する。

「遺産的名盤」にかこつけた便乗商法、水増し商法はもう止めにして欲しい。

　本商品は、１枚目がオリジナルの「つづれおり」まんま、そして２枚目が、73年の３カ所と76年の１カ所のライブから引っ張って来た、「つづれおり」収録曲の「ピアノ弾き語り」集。決して、ワン・コンサートをそのまま収録した訳ではない。
　だから、１曲未収録曲がある。
　また、「スマック・ウォーター・ジャック」は、従来版にボーナスで収録されていたものと同じテイク（73/5/21　ボストン）。
　確かに原盤ライナーなどで述べられている趣旨はそれなりに筋が通っている。
　しかし、個人的には、もし「つづれおり」というLPの真の「レガシー・エディション」を造ろうというのなら、同セッションからの未発表テイクやメイキング・セッションを集めて来るだろう。
　そういった素材が無いのであれば、先年紙ジャケでも再発されたばかりだし、このような形での販売はどうかと思う。
　しかも、従来版ボーナス収録の「アウト・イン・ザ・コールド」が未収録なために、オールド・ファンは手持ちのCDを売り払う訳にも行かない。
　私が販売責任者なら、今回のライブ抜粋の元になった四つのコンサートをボックス・セットにして、丸ごと販売するだろう。
　そうすれば、ファンは海賊盤に悩まされずに済む。
　今回、こういった形での販売がなされたということは、絶対に、制作過程で、何者かがマスターテープをコピーして外部に流出している筈だ。おそらく、もうすぐ、海賊盤で４つのライブが出回ることだろう（もう、出てる？）

　なお、本作の評価☆一つは、あくまでも本パッケージに対するもので、音楽内容は文句無く☆５つです。
