今さら改めて云々するのもかえって野暮のような気もしますが、アナログで散々聞いてきた方も多いはずのこのアルバムは、個人的なことを言わせてもらえば、その良さは認めるにやぶさかではありませんが、どうしても体質的にたくさんは聞くことのない、いわゆる「ウッドストック系」の中にあって、例外的に長年親しんできた一枚で、マリア・マルダーは好きと公言する割りに実はこの一枚しか所有していなかったりします。全編、タイトル通りの「オールド・タイム」な曲調のアメリカン・ミュージックが並び、エイモス・ギャレットのギターが歌に寄り添うように奏でられます（随所にそれっぽいピアノが聞こえるので、もしやのドクター・ジョンも、本名のマック・レヴェナックで参加しています）。楽曲的にも「真夜中のオアシス」やドリー・パートンの原曲と甲乙付け難い「マイ・テネシー・マウンテン・ホーム」、ロン・デイヴィスの「ロング・ハード・クライム」（セルフ・カヴァーもよいです）を始め、いずれ劣らぬ佳曲揃いです。

私が洋楽を聴き始めた頃、よくラジオで聴いたヒット曲「真夜中のオアシス」。懐かしさからこのデジタル・リマスターされた名盤を入手したが、実に耳に心地よい。「真夜中のオアシス」に限らず、アルバム全体を通じて、改めてこの頃の彼女の艶っぽい声とバックのライ・クーダー、エイモス・ギャレット、ドクター・ジョン（マック・レベナックの名で参加）、ジム・ケルトナー、スプーナー・オールダム、アンドリュー・ゴールド、デヴィッド・リンドレー等のつわものが作り出す、ルーツ・ミュージックをとりいれたサウンドのおしゃれさ、その完成度の高さに驚く。

ベット・ミドラーのデビューが７２年で、本作も古き良きアメリカン・ミュージックを志向する当時の音楽シーンの代表作と位置づけられるが、ドリー・パートンのヒット曲（Ｍ３）やウェンディ・ウォルドマンの曲（Ｍ１０，１１）を採り上げる等、エミルー・ハリスやリンダ・ロンシュタットに象徴される７０年代西海岸女声シンガーの活躍への道を切り拓いた偉大な作品とも評することもできる。しかし、「真夜中のオアシス」の素晴らしさの前ではジャンル分け等、野暮なだけだ。

ディランの「ノー・ディレクション・ホーム」に出演していたように、Ｍ．マルダーはＮＹ生まれで６０年代初頭のグリニッチ・ヴィレッジ文化の洗礼を受けた人。その後、ウッド・ストック移住を経て本作では西海岸の歌姫となった。最近の彼女の作品としてはハート・オブ・マイン　ラヴ・ソングス・オブ・ボブ・ディランがお薦めだ。

全編通じて、カントリー、フォーク、ブルー・グラス、ブルースというアメリカのルーツ・ミュージックが探求されています。ディラン、ヤング、エミルー・ハリスなどが好きな人は聴いてみてください。ただし、彼女は、シンガーであっても、ソングライターではありません。
カタログにある通り、デジタル・リマスター済みです。日本盤のみ、歌詞、対訳つきです。日本盤ライナーは、2008年のもの、つまり書き下ろしです。
