オープニングはアルバム・タイトルのSpainで、これは３０数年前に世に出たチック・コリアの代表作である。続くのがJ.ロドリーゴのアランフェス協奏曲。アタマのこれら２曲を一つの作品演奏として聴いてみると、マシューズがイメージした”スペイン”が理解できるような気がする。この２曲に限ったことではないし、いつものことながら、マシューズの編曲の妙が見事に具現化されている。チック・コリアがアランフェスを下敷きにして『スペイン』を書いたのに対してマシューズは、改めて２曲に分解して聴かせてくれている。これぞまさしく”換骨奪胎”であり、ＭＪＯの情熱的な演奏にも支えられて、それぞれがいずれも完成度の高い作品となっている。
７０年近く前に発表されたロドリーゴのアランフェスは、このアルバム後半のスタートとなっているタルレガのアランブラ（と表記するほうが現地語発音に近い）と共に、古今東西のギターの名手たちが好んで演奏している。またジャズの世界でも、もうかれこれ半世紀近く前に、マイルス・デイヴィスがあのギル・エヴァンスとのコラボによる"Sketches of Spain"を出している。実はマシューズ自身も、ＭＪＱ結成１０周年記念の１９９４年に、Eddie Gomez(b)とSteve Gadd (ds)を特別ゲストに迎えて『アランフェス協奏曲』のタイトル名でアルバムを出している。私にとっては、クラシック・ジャズのどちらの世界でもかなり聴きなれたナンバーである。にもかかわらず、このＣＤを何度も繰り返し聴くのは、マシューズの魔術にかかってしまっているのかもしれない。クロージングの"Amazing Grace"（作曲者は不詳）は、アメリカで愛唱されている賛美歌。素晴らしい曲だし、ブラスの重低音を活かした演奏も見事ではあるが、タイトル名"Spain"というアルバムのクロージングには別の選択もあったのであるまいか。

　　「スペイン」、「アランフェス」、「アルハンブラ」、などこれまでいろいろなアーティストによるアレンジを聴いてきました。今回、ビッグバンドによるアレンジはどうなのか、非常に楽しみにしていたのですが、、、、。
　大きく裏切られました。虚しささえ感じます。　「スペイン」、「アランフェス」、「アルハンブラ」ファンの方にとっては「聴くのがつらい」でしょう。 マンハッタン・ジャズ・オーケストラのファンにとってはこれが普通なのでしょうけど。
