はじめに、私はクラシック音楽に関して、
その曲成立の背景や演奏の良し悪しについて
云々できる人間ではないことをお断りしておきます。
よって、自分の好きな曲だけを気ままに聴いている、
軽薄な一クラシック音楽ファンの放言と予めお知り置きの上、
以下の文章をお読みください。

ヴォ―ン・ウィリアムズという名前を知ったのはここ最近のことです。
しかし、彼の曲にはずいぶん以前から触れていました。
ある日、イギリス民謡のコンピレーションアルバムを
かけていた時のことです。その中の一曲が妙に印象に残りました。
続けてセント・ポール大聖堂聖歌隊、
ケンブリッジ大学・キングズ・カレッジ聖歌隊、
オックスフォード大学ニュー・カレッジ聖歌隊のアルバムと
続けてかけていて、そのいずれでも同じ妙な印象を私は受けました。
横着な私は、曲名や作曲者を確認しないことも多いのですが、
この時はチェックしました。すると、私を魅了した曲はすべて、
ヴォ―ン・ウィリアムズの手になる曲だったのです。
その時、まるで、彼が私を自分へと招いている、
そんなえも言われぬ感動に包まれました。

早速、注文し届いたこのBOX-CDから
無作為に一枚を選んでかけました。
それは紛れもなく彼、ヴォ―ン・ウィリアムズでした。
それほどまでに、すべての作品に彼の姿が刻印されているのです。
はじめて聴くはずの曲でも、以前どこかで聴いたような、
そんなデジャ＝ビュに似た感じを覚えます。

門外漢の私が偉そうなことを書いてしまいました。
作曲家ヴォ―ン・ウィリアムズの評価がどのようなものであるのか
私にはわかりません。そしてまた、このBOXに収められている
各ＣＤの演奏が高水準のものなのかどうかもわかりません。
しかし、このCD-BOXは劇的ではないにしろ、
どの一枚も静かな感動を与えてくれます。

みなさんも、秋の夕暮れに一枚おかけになってみてはいかがでしょうか？

ヴォーン・ウィリアムズはロンドンの王立音楽大学で作曲を学び、在学中にホルストと知り合い親交を深めています。民謡の採集や教会音楽の研究を通して独特の作風を確立し、イギリスの音楽界に於ける復興の礎となった作曲家です。彼の一面である、イギリスの田園風景を彷彿とさせる牧歌的な作風は、広くイギリス国民に愛されていますが、曲によっては「田舎臭く退屈」とも評されてもいますが。
友人のホルストの『惑星』の様な爆発的な人気を博した作には恵まれていませんが、欧米ではホルストよりも評価が高く、生涯に9つの交響曲を遺し、また、イングランドの民謡を題材にした作品も多い作曲家です。
３０枚組というたぶんほとんどの作曲を網羅していると思います。聞き慣れた曲も多いのでは？お奨めのセットです。
