This Black Londoner of Barbadian descent truly snuck up on the pop world with this 1994 disc, her second recording. Her ode to self-reliance and persistence, "You Gotta Be," rode lilting pop jazz backing to widespread acceptance (except, curiously, on "urban" radio, where her sound was deemed not black enough). The inspired video of the song became a staple at VH1. The single is indicative of the rest of the album. Most of it was written after a painful breakup with a long-time beau, so her focus is on trumpeting resilience and self-nurturing themes. Her creamy voice and austere but swinging backing make it work. --Martin Johnson

デズリーの2ndアルバム。ブレイクのきっかけともなった1.You Gotta Beは、女性ヴォーカリストのオムニバスにも収録されているので、１度は耳にしたことがあるのでは？力みのない、心にしみ入るような歌声を聴かせてくれます。個人的には彼女のデビュー曲であり、1stアルバムにも入っていた3.Feel So Highの初々しい感じが好きですが。

Des'reeといえば、日本のドラマで使われていた"Life"や『ロミオ＆ジ
ュリエット』の劇中歌"I'm kissing you"が有名ですね。どちらの曲も
収録されていないけど、私はこのアルバムが好きです。

とにかく詩がすばらしい。どこかで聞いたことのあるお仕着せの言葉や
価値観ではなく、独自の哲学(美学といった方が適格か)を聞かせてくれ
る。だからといって自分の思想を振りかざすのではない。実にしなやか
に、凛として、自分の言葉で自分の世界観を歌い上げる。ついつい浸っ
てしまう。一時期は毎日聞いていた。

子どものころから詩を書いていて、それに曲をつけるようになったとい
う彼女。文学的にも質の高い詩を見ればそれにも納得できるはず。

音楽に興味がなくても詩や文学が好きな人はぜひ聞いてみてください！
絶対お勧めです！
