前作のLIVE盤、「ジョンメイヤートリオ」に続く新作ソロアルバム。リズム隊は前作同様Jordan(ds)とPino Palladino(b)がつとめているのだが、イントゥルメンタル面よりも歌を重視した、前作と2ndの路線との融合とでもいうべき内容となっている。ギターはレイヴォーンばりに弾きまくるほどではないけど、レイドバック期、或いは「pilgrim」のCLAPTONくらいは弾いているので、2ndで感じた物足りなさは解消。本音でいえばもっと弾いて欲しいけどね。こんなに色気のあるトーンでストラトを鳴らすギタリストもそうそういないのだから。

曲調は殆どがスロー〜ミドルテンポで地味な印象だが、心に残る曲ばかりで何度も繰り返して聴いてしまう。シンプルながらもブルース、ソウル、ポップス、JAZZなど様々なエッセンスが凝縮された、非常に中身の濃い音楽性はとても25歳の若者が作ったものとは思えない。それをまた渋い声で歌いこなしてしまうところが素晴らしい。これまでの最高傑作であることは間違いないと断言してしまおう。

ギターについては諸所で言われる通りよいし、天才スティーブ・ジョーダンのドラムも素晴らしい。特にドラムが今作の核ではないかと思うほど気持ちイイ。これ見よがしなテクは一切なし。ただただ曲と歌のよさを前面に出すためのドラム。そして、歌と歌詞は前作から飛躍的に良くなった(僕の趣味では)。１曲目は政治的ともとれる内容だが、よりナイーブで感動的ですらある。怒れるニール・ヤングとは違い、ブッシュ再選後におけるアメリカの若者が抱く気分が伝わってくる気がした。ジョンが「満足いく完成度になるまでリリースを控えた」と語るように、本当にスキのない作りで何度聴いても飽きない。時間も５０分ジャストでちょうどいい。うまいのは当然だが、一音一音が厳選され、弾きすぎで冗長になることもなく、耳に残るギターフレーズがいっぱい詰まっています。あと、ジョンのギターはエレキだけでなくアコギも素晴らしいです。

変わったなぁ、と思った。
1stから順に飽きるほど聞いてきたけど、
2ndのクッション無しではこの３枚目には戸惑うのではないかと思う。
２枚目から意図的に渋めに移行してきたけど、
今作は玄人受けしそうな超渋い作品に仕上がっている。

何しろ今回はJohn Mayerソロ作品というよりも、
むしろJOHN MAYER TRIOと言っても良い位、
バックの演奏が主張している。
これまでは演奏が地味だという評価がずっとされてきたけど、
今回は生音での演奏で十分に聴かせてくれる。

もともと技量は十分だったから、
John Mayer本人もこういうのが作りたかったのだな〜と思う。
1stのように一聴して「良いなー！」という曲は
今のところ無いように思われるけど、
これは聞くほどに良さが腹の底からじわじわと来る、
そんな作品だと思います。

ただ、渋くなってもやはり
歌詞からは彼らしさが伝わります。
何となくほっとするような。
メッセージ性のあるものもいくつかあるようです。

1stの方が2ndより好きだという人には強くは勧めませんが、
JOHN MAYER TRIOが好きな人は即買いでしょう。
