意味が有る無しに関わらず、何とかここを脱出しなければならない・・。
目の前に在るモノの法則性を見つけ利用し、各階をクリアしていく。
そのギミックの一つが「ポータル」と呼ばれるゲートなのだ。

このゲーム、元は「ハーフライフ2　オレンジボックス」に同梱されていたオマケゲームである。
ゲーム専門学校の卒業プロジェクトとして制作されたものの、あまりにいいデキに製品版としての道が開け、ついには『Game Developers Choice Awards』の2007年Game of the Year賞まで取ってしまったと言う代物だ。
そのため単体での発売もされたといういわくがあったりする。

何の予備知識もなく始めると、まるで知能テストの檻に放り込まれたサルの気分になる。
最初のステージから順に「ポータルは通れる」事を学び、「キューブとスイッチの関係」を学び、「青ポータルとオレンジポータル」の関係に気づいていく・・。
そのあたりの閉鎖された場所の雰囲気がどことなく映画「キューブ」な印象で、またドキドキ感をあおってくれる。

正にプレイヤーは学習しながら、部屋の中のものの利用方法を探し出していくのである。
吊るされたバナナをどうやって取っていいか悩むサルの気分そのままに、いつしか難度の高いクリアに脳汁を出すようになっていくから怖い。

ゲーム内のデザインは無用な装飾を取り払った非常にシンプルで機能的な造形にあふれている。
それでいて、ポータルのどことなく有機的な丸い形や、ポータルの向こうに写るプレイヤー自身の姿などとの対比がえもいわれぬ「味」を出している。
ちらりと視界に入る合わせ鏡の無限像など実に不思議な感覚だ。
それこそ目の前に鏡を置かれたサルの如く、「ほー、ほほー」と視点を変えながら自分の背中を見ようとしてしまう・・。
監視カメラや曇りガラスの向こうの存在など謎の演出もなかなかいい雰囲気だ。

パズルというものは、一度解くと2度目のプレイの感動は無いようなものだが
ともあれ、これは久々に買ってよかったと思うソフトのひとつであった。
Steamにてデモ版も出てるのでパズル好きには是非ともおすすめしたい。

そのシステムもさることながら、ストーリーや面の構成もしっかりしていて飽きさせない出来になっていると思う。
徹底したシンプルなデザインもツボだった。
値段以上の物だと思うので手に入れるのが吉。

本編をクリアするだけなら個人差もありますが半日もあれば終わります。一度クリアすれば30分もあれば終わってしまうでしょう。
しかし、その世界観、ゲーム性、ストーリー、パズルを解くための発想の転換など…かなりの奥深さをこのゲームはもっています。
また、パズルゲームにも分類されますが、非常に親切に作られています。どこともしれない空間に投げ出されて、どうしたらいいかわからないと言うことはなく
序盤はどうやってクリアしていけばいいのか、どうすれば進むかなどを教えてくれます。
後半はそこで学んだことを応用していくような感じです。クリアしたら、開発者による解説を見ると「ああ、よく作られているんだなあ」と感心するはず。

解法は一つではありません、ゴールに到達する道はいくらでもあります。前にクリアした方法だけでなく、他の道からゴールを目指してみてはいかがでしょうか？
