自分は過去２作をとても気に入っていますが、普段Hip Hopなど聴かないので、その音楽的なルーツに関しては分からずに愛聴していました。でも、今作はその音楽的な背景がとてもよく分かります。ジェフが７０年代クラウトロックからの影響を語っているのは知っていましたが、まさかこれ程顕著に影響を感じるとは驚きです。
曲としては1.Silence, 3.Nylon Smile, 4.The Rip, 6.We Carry On, 8.Machine Gunですが、特に３、６、８にそれが顕著です。
特徴としては初期クラウトロックのカンの乾いたスネア音と単一コードのギター、ノイのハンマービート、クラスターの単調ノイズ音などでしょうか。
３.などはボーカルが男性であればカンの楽曲といってもよい程です。
また、全体としてはそれだけに終始せず、間にアコースティックな曲を挟んでくるのでバランスがとれていると思います。
個人的には、PILがメタルボックスで同じくクラウトロックの影響に言及していたものと近いものを感じます。ジェフとジョン・ライドンは同じ英国音楽オタクとして、似た感性があるのかも知れません。双方同じ音楽の影響の基、過去に類を見ない楽曲を作り上げました。
このレヴューを読んで気になった方はぜひカンの「Tago Mago」、ノイの１ｓｔ、初期Clusterなどを聴いてみてください。感性が合えばとても気に入るはずです。

やはり名盤dummyを越えられない…
LIVEDVDとdummyの時期が一番輝いていたと思う。dummyが完成度高すぎです…

彼らの世界は誰にも超えられない。彼ら自身にも。
そう思わせるくらい、1st･2ndはともに凄まじい作品だった。
耽美で憂鬱な空気がヘッドホンから漏れ出し、聴くたびにその世界に浸れた。
しかもそのあと驚いたことにライブアルバム「PNYC」を発表。
彼らの世界はスタジオのみに存在するものではないことを証明した。

そして10年が経過。
あまりに彼らの不在期間が長すぎたので、新作が出ても過度の期待はしないつもりだった。
しかしこうして届いた「THIRD」はどこまでもPortisheadのままだ。
どれだけBPMが上がろうと高揚させることのないドラムサウンド。
津波のように徐々に水かさを増してすべてを飲み込んでしまうギター。
寒い日に降り付ける雨のように容赦なく体温を奪っていくボーカル。
その音像はまるで、誰の手も届かないところに作られた繊細な砂の城。
彼らの時計は止まったままでいてくれた･･････？
いや、ちがう。完成された世界に時間など存在しない。
彼らは知っている、自分達が築き上げた世界がどの時代にも無視されないことを。

以上、素人評論家の語り調で書きました。
10年待たされたみなさん、その不安は一曲目で吹き飛んだから安心していい。
初めてPortisheadに触れるひと、コレが気に入ったら過去作も聴いて欲しい。
