鮮烈なデビュー・アルバム『BOY』と、衝撃的な問題作『WAR』の間に挟まれて、本作『OCTOBER』は地味な印象があるが、これは、かなりの傑作である。まず、アルバム全体を包み込む、神秘的な《蒼さ》が非常に美しい。さらに、演奏の方は、アルバム全体の美しさとは裏腹に、どこまでもハード・エッジな力強い《ロックンロール》に仕上がっている。まさに、初期U2ならではの、魅力的な傑作である。この後、U2フォロワーのバンドが続出するが、その原点とも言えるアルバムである。初期U2が好きな人には、必聴必携の名盤です。

なぜか彼らのアルバムの中で最も知名度が低く、取り上げられることが最もないアルバムとなっています。一般的にどのアーティストもセカンドアルバムはマイナーアルバムになることが多いですが・・・。本作は基本的にはファーストの延長線上のサウンドですが、全体としての出来はファーストよりいいです。が、グロリア以外の楽曲はやはりギターなんかは紛れもなくU2っぽさを出してはいるのですが、やはりインパクトには欠ける。悪くはないが突出して良くもない標準的な出来に留まっている。個人的には次作以降のブレイクしてからの大袈裟なサウンドより、本作までのポストパンクＢ級バンド然としたコンパクトなサウンドの方が好きですが。どうでのいいことですが、ジャケを見ると普通のバンドなら裏方地味なベースとドラムのリズム隊の方がボーカルやギターよりカッコいいという変わったバンドですねＵ2は。
