それにしてもNEW YEAR'S DAYのプロモ格好良かった！　評論家の中には、U2を青臭い等と評していた連中も居たけれど、当時自分はまだ高校生だったから｢何を言ってんだ、おっさんには判るまい｣って憤慨したもんです。そんな自分も今や41のおっさん。さすがに当時程は熱くなれないけれど、それでもWARこそが一番アイリッシュ魂を感じさせてくれる熱く官能的な作品には違いないと思います。しかし、よく言われてる乾いたギター、ドラムの音色、空気感はＣＤだとかなりスポイルされてしまってる。これってWARを聴く上でとても重要な要素だと思う、あの乾いた冬空を切り裂く様なサウンドとヴォーカルは、何やら煌びやかになってしまっている。

いまや、もっとも発言に重みがあるロックバンドU2。若い頃の作品はイキのいい
プロテストソングでした。やっぱりいい大人になるには、若いときに、しっかりと主張
できる理想と問題意識がないとダメですね。・・・などというおっさん視点の感想です。
まあ、もう中年なので、今は燃えないのですが、若いときは一緒に革命起こしたる
ぐらいのいきおいで聴いてました。若い人にしっかりきいてほしいなあ。
世界はこの時よりよくなっているとはおもえないです。
安い労働力の搾取による富の格差、技術による生産性の埋めようがない競争力の差・・・
この歌をうたって現実をかえようとした若者が、いまは国連に難民支援を取り付けるような
本当に力ある男になったのです。

今では信じられないかもしれないが、８０年代にある意味正統派のロック・バンドが活動していくのは非常に困難な状況にあった。そう、ＭＴＶが登場してからはファッション・センスや演技力がなければ生き残れなくなってしまったからだ。ピーター・ガブリエルやカーズの様にＭＴＶを巧みに利用する事に成功した例もあるが、音楽性と両立出来たアーティストは希であった。

Ｕ２のアルバムで個人的に好きな曲が収録されているのは「ボーイ」。最も完成度が高いと思っているのが「ヨシュア・トゥリー」。しかし、「Ｗａｒ」の衝撃は忘れられない。特に、「ブラッディ・サンデイ」の緊張感や「トゥ・ハーツ・ビート・アズ・ワン」の躍動感などは圧倒的だ。ＭＴＶとは無関係（ＰＶを制作しなかったという意味ではない）の存在感がＵ２には確かにあったと思う。最高に格好いいロック・アルバムだ！
