   1980年のデビュー時のU2には、バンドが将来世界を制することを思わせる要素はほとんど見あたらなかった。実際、本作にあるのは野暮ったいかもしれないが魅力的な、成人したばかりのバンドの切迫感だった。そうしたナンバー「I Will Follow」、「Stories for Boys」、「Out of Control」は、現在の大げさで芝居がかったスタジアムバンドのU2に慣れ親しんだリスナーには驚きかもしれない。ボノの視点は、まだじれったいほど曖昧で素朴で、その鼻につくほど議論好きの傾向がまだ目立っていないことは明らかだ。ボノの聖歌のごとき切望感に満ちたナンバーは、世の中に嫌気のさした億万長者のものではなく、10代を終えたばかりのダブリンっ子のものである。
   バンドがかいま見せる音楽的な不安定さも、プロデューサーのスティーブ・リリーホワイトによって当時新鮮だったニューウェーブ風に丹念に磨き上げられ、本作では有利に働いている。エッジのエフェクトを多用した濃密なギターワークは今から見ればあまりにありきたりに聴こえるしれない。けれども、それはその効果をあからさまに用いた本作こそが80年代のロックシーン全体に重要な影響を与え、その技法を世に広めたからである。『October』のようなムードや音楽的完成度はないが、本作は依然としてU2のアルバムの最高の1枚に数えられる。（Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com）

セックスピストルズの巻き起こしたパンクムーブメントの空気のかかったアップテンポなメロディ、それでいてとても聞きやすいエッジの美しいギターの音色には感動ものです。アウトオブコントロールは何度聞いても新鮮なナンバー、ベストに入れていいような曲がほとんどのように思えます。とにかくおすすめ！

U2のデビューアルバムです。U2の原点がここにあるのではないでしょうか？（あたりまえですが・・・・）若いがゆえの悩み、社会のゆがみ、兵役、悩めるU２が感じたとてつもなく大きな壁を乗り越えようとする純粋、無垢なU2を味わってください。正義感の強い、または、この世の中の矛盾を感じ、深く悩むような青年時代に味わった人なら、もしくは、今、現時点で悩んでいるならば、きっと、その若かりし頃のU2を感じることができるでしょう。

U2の記念すべき、《デビュー・アルバム》です。しかも、デビュー・アルバムにして、もうすでに《傑作》です。この後の、80年代UKロックの主流となった《ロック理想主義》、あるいは《正統派ロック》と言った流れは、やはり、このアルバムが《出発点》なのだと思います。個人的には、エッジのギターの瑞々しい《音色》が、心に染みて来ます。マニアなら必聴必携、初心者にもオススメできる、傑作アルバムです。
