ダブルトリオ後、一連のプロジェクトを経て、結局、ブラッフォード、レヴィン抜きの４人からなるlineup６で２０００年に発表されたアルバムです。メンツは同じですが、次作がヌゥオボメタルを掲げているのに対し、当アルバムでは、そういったコンセプトは用意されていません。ただ、サウンド的には、lineup６の特徴の１つであるヘヴィさがかなり前面に出ており、ヌゥオボメタルに至る過渡期アルバムといえるかもしれません。過渡期と言うと、一聴、否定的に聞こえますが、ＫＣの場合、コンセプトをライブを重ねる中で、煮詰めていくバンドであり、コンセプトの完成前・熟成後のサウンドが最も面白いのも事実です。
サウンドのヘヴィさとも相まって、全てのＫＣファンにお奨めのアルバムではありませんが、lineup６ファンであれば、楽しめるアルバムだと思います。

００年発表。この頃のクリムゾンは過去のライヴ音源を乱発していた時期であり、それらがそこそこおもしろい内容だったために、本作は買ったものの、一度も聞くことがなかった。次作 (間に各種の作品は出ているが・・・) に当たる『パワー・トゥ・ビリーヴ』が発表された時の日本ツアーのライヴに足を運んだ折にこのアルバムのタイトル曲の素晴しい演奏に感動して、それからやっと聞いた。はっきり言ってこの曲はライヴの方が数百倍素晴しいが、スタジオ録音でも十分に美しい仕上がりだと思う。ライヴはガラガラだったが、何度か見たクリムゾンのらライヴの中でも最高のものであり、この時期から次作までのグループの充実度が良く理解出来た。いわゆるドラムン・ベース的な低音主体のサウンドと復活後の中心的なサウンドである７０年代中期のメタル的要素、そして８０年代のミニマル・シーケンスを融合したいわば焼き直しの集大成ともいうべき内容だが、お家芸を出し尽くした潔さはなかなか痛快だと思う。クリムゾンでしか絶対に出せない緊張感と重量感はこの作品でも顕著に見られ、聞き応えは十分。もはや良いとか悪いとかいうレベルでもないだろう。

一番聴いていないのが本作。

何故かと言うと・・・、まず「暗い」。
もともとハッピーなテーマ性で音楽を作る集団ではないが、それにしたって暗すぎる気がする。

あと・・・複雑怪奇すぎる。
演奏が込み入りすぎて、凄いのは分かるのだが、消化しきれずにバンバン進んでいくので、消化不良を起こす。

傑作扱いされている本作。
確かに、レヴェルは高いのは分かるのだが、僕が好きなクリムゾンではなかった・・・。

しかし、それでも星三つですよ。
やっぱ、クリムゾンですしね。

たまには、聴きますよ。

・・・たまには・・・ね。
