８０年代クリムゾン最終作。
実は、８０年代は「ディシプリン」ではなく、この作品から入りました。
実は、当時一番好きな作品でした。
が、世間的にはあまり評価は高くないみたいですね・・・。

何でかなぁ・・？
かなり良いと思うけど。

４曲目の「マン・ウィズ・アン・オープン・ハート」が大好きな、僕でした。

８４年発表の再編３作目。黄色のジャケットが眩しい８０年代再編クリムゾンのラスト作。クリムゾンの作品としては際立ってポップな異色作が詰まった前半とニュー・ウェイヴを経過したサウンドでの前衛的な演奏を聞かせる後半とハッキリと内容を分けた作品だが、通して聞いても見事な統一感を感じさせる“さすが”の完成度を持っている。ポップな曲を単なる売れ線と判断した方々には著しく評価が低く、７０年代クリムゾンの名曲のタイトルを引っぱってきた９．もかつての作品とは大きく質感が異なるため、そういう意味でも評価が分かれる仕上がりだが、実は８０年代クリムゾンの持ち味を極端な形で分かりやすく示した作品であり、変な偏見さえなければ一番楽しめる作品だと思う。特に前半４曲の激ポップな曲はブリューのソロとは違った高級感を合わせ持った仕上がりであり、完成度はすこぶる高い。トーキング・ヘッズ辺りを更にポップにした感じのパワー・ポップをクリムゾンというブランドで、かつ違和感なく聞かせているのはかなり驚異的な所業だ。もちろん８０年代クリムゾンのミニマル＋ポリリズムを骨肉化してでのこのポップさだ。１．は爽やか？なバック・コーラスとサウンドの切り替えがアクセントになっているデジタル・シンセ？もしくはギターのソロが眩しい素晴しい一曲。２．もクリムゾン流のアフロっぽいパワー・ポップ。ブリューの泣きのヴォーカルが素晴しい。３．は本作でほとんど唯一のライヴの定番曲。レヴィンのスティックが印象的だ。４．もモロにトーキング・ヘッズなポップ曲。メロディアスで印象的な一曲である。５．以降ではフリップが以降の活動で活発に演奏するサウンド・スケープ的なトーンも既に登場している。
本作はライヴで演奏される機会が少ないこともあり、評価が比較的低いことも多々あるが、実際には文句の付けようのない完成度であり、クリムゾンでは縁が薄いポップさという意味においては最高の作品である。プログレばかりを聞いているとこういう作品の良さは分かりにくくなるのかもしれないが、多くの８０年代の作品の中でも極めて高品位のポップ・アルバムだと思う。もちろん個人的には一押しであり、かなり愛聴している作品である。何となくフルコースを食べた後の美味しいデザート・・・そんなイメージを持っている。夏に聞くクリムゾンもまた良し、そう思わずいられない名盤である。
