発売されてから40年近く経ちましたが、その燦然と輝く音楽自体の完成度の素晴らしさに一体何をどう評価すれば良いのか、ということに怖気づきながら、書き込む勇気が無かったわけですが、ほぼリアルタイムで聞いてきた音楽ですから、感想を述べたいと思っています。

発売当時の1969年はまさしく激動の年でした。ベトナム戦争は混迷を極めた後、アメリカが辛酸をなめ、日本の大学はロック・アウトされ、東大は入試ができませんでした。時代を反映するかのごとく、音楽は常に革新性と斬新さを求めた時代でした。今から思えば『アビイ・ロード』の完成度の高さとは別の次元の音楽として『クリムゾン・キングの宮殿』が登場したのですが、日本の音楽シーンでは、すぐにはこの偉大なアルバムの評価は定まらなかったと思います。つまり世の中がついていけなかったわけですが、コアなロック・ファンによってこの不朽の名盤は、口コミによって少しずつ支持されていきました。

何十回となくこのアルバムを聴いてきました。今から40年ほど前、このような宇宙的とも言える広がりをもつ音楽と遭遇するという体験は、未曾有の領域へと連れていかれるものに等しく、ただひたすら流れ出る音の洪水の中に身を任せていると、まさしく未知なる遠い地平へと連れて行かれる感覚に襲われました。暗い部屋で大音量の中でこれを聴くことによって恍惚感を得られ、まさに天上の音楽となり得たのでした。

クリームもレッド・ツェッペリンもE.L.P.もそれぞれの音楽を確立し、後のロック・シーンに大きな影響を与えてきましたが、キング・クリムゾンは別格の存在でした。
この5曲の構成の妙とそれぞれの水準の高さ、また高貴でありながら狂気の部分を併せ持つという多面性において『クリムゾン・キングの宮殿』を越えるアルバムはない、と言えるでしょう。

もし無人島にCDを1枚だけ持っていけるなら、間違いなくこれを選びます。

初めて聴いたのは1971年でしたが、実はその前にマクドナルド＆ジャイルスやEL&Pを聴いていました。　「クリムゾン・キングの宮殿」のメンバーだったイアン・マクドナルドやマイケル・ジャイルス、そしてグレッグ・レイクが後から録音したLPの方が、日本では先に発売されていたからです。　こんなスゴイLPを2年近く眠らせてしまった理由は何なのか、ぜひ訊いてみたいものです。

初めて聴いたときに鳥肌が立ったのは、"21st Century Schizoid Man"のエンディング、そして一瞬の静寂の後に始まる"I Talk to the Wind"でした。　さらに"Epitaph"の"But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying, yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying..."では涙が出そうになりました。　その感動は40年近く経ち、恐らく何千回も聴いた今でも、何も変わらないような気がします。

それからクリムゾンのLPが出るという話を聞く度に楽しみにしていたのですが、1974年に「レッド」「U.S.A.」を残して解散してしまったときには完全に虚脱感に襲われました。　1969-1974のキング・クリムゾンのライブはとうとう観る機会がありませんでしたが、確か1982年に、再結成されたキング・クリムゾンを米国で観ることができました。　ただ、もう1969-1974のような感動はありませんでした。　むしろ1978年に観たU.K.（ジョブソン／ウェットン／ホールズワース／ブリュッフォード）のライブの方が夢中になれたように思います。　ウェットン／ブリュッフォードは1974のキング・クリムゾンのメンバーだったからです。

何だか昔話になってしまいました。　その後いろいろな音楽を聴いています（例えば去年はミュージカル"Spring Awakening"に感動しました）が、こちらの感受性が鈍ってしまったこともあって、この「宮殿」を超えるようなものには出会っていないような気がします。

LPのジャケットはジャコ・パストリアスのポートレートの横にいまも飾られています。

ヘヴィ・メタルとジャズが融合してしまった"21st century schizoid man"、
詩情豊かな"I talk to the wind"、極めて雄大な"In the court of the crimson king"と
今更くだくだ言うのも恥ずかしいくらい名曲揃いのアルバム。

歌詞に着目してみよう。
21世紀を迎えたところで我々全員が精神に異常を来たしたわけではないが、
人類の運命が愚か者の手にあるのは"Epitaph"に歌われている通りだ。
とは言え明日を恐れるからと言って泣き叫んでばかりいられないのが現実であるがゆえに
'Confusion will be my epitaph'（混乱が私の墓碑銘）という
ロック史上恐らく最も有名なフレーズはもはや何の有効性もない。

そんなこともあって、実は私はこの作品、あまり好きではない。
あまりに悲観的過ぎて、うっとうしくなってくるのだ。
大体このアルバムで一番好きな曲が"I talk to the wind"なのだから
多分私にはこのアルバムのファンとしてもキング・クリムゾンのファンとしても
何らかの決定的な資質が欠けているのだろうけど。

ロバート・フリップはこのアルバムを越えようと必死になっているようだが
（そのせいか「メタル」というテーマに変にこだわっている）
ロバート・フリップばかりではない。ロック・ミュージックこそが
この巨大な壁を乗り越え、あるいはぶち壊さなければならないのだ。
