内容紹介

バウハウスのニュー・アルバムは新作にして最終作!オリジナル・メンバーが結集し、18日間という短期間で一発録りに近い状況でレコーディング。歌詞が掲載されるのは日本盤だけ。更に対訳は一度英語に翻訳してオリジナルに基づいた訳なのかをメンバーが慎重にチェックしたらしい。

邦題の「暗闇のごとく現れ、白い陽炎のように去りゆく」は収録曲「Black Stone Heart」からの引用。このアルバムそしてバンドの状況を表すにふさわしい。
幻想的なジャケット・デザインはNYのセントラル・パークにあるベセスダ噴水の像をモチーフにしている。

十数年ぶりのオリジナル・アルバム。発売を心待ちにしていた。
だが、その反面「内容的に大丈夫なのか？」と言う猜疑心も持っていた。
収録曲は再結成ツアーの合間をぬって製作されたものらしい。
当初は発売に消極的だったとの話もある。

発売前のプロモーションで、各メンバーのインタヴィューを読むと・・・

デヴィッドの「４人でスタジオに入ると、またあのマジックが甦った。が、時間が経過するごとに、昔と同じ問題が表面化してきた・・・」
ダニエルの「バウハウスとは、４人集まると”一触即発”なんだよ・・・」
と言った言葉が目立った。最終的にはピーターvsラヴ・ロケの構図が再び浮き彫りにされた形で終わったようだ。ある意味これは予想できたことだが・・・

アルバムの感想としては、異常に音質がクリアだ。曲その物の出来も決して悪いわけではない。演奏力は確実に進歩してるし、ピーターの表現力も増している。
・・・だけど何回も聞きたいとは思わない。何故？。
何か聞く者の五感を刺激するような圧力や鳥肌が立つような感覚は無い・・・

９７年の再結成時、メンバー自身が口にしていた「バウハウスを如何にして、忠実に再現するか」と言うコンセプトが思い出される。７０〜８０年代に活躍した他のバンドが再結成した時に見受けられる、往生際の悪さや、惨めさ、言い訳がましさが、その時のバウハウスには全く感じなかった。
メンバー自身が過去を越える事は出来ない事は一番分っていただろうし、それ故に前回の再結成時に、ライブ録音と新曲はデッド・カン・ダンスのカヴァーで止めておいた４人の意向が理解できるし妥当な判断だ。
しかし、まぁ、今回の発売は現実問題として年老いたメンバーの金銭問題や、色々なシガラミがあっての事もあろうが・・・これは駄作だ！。出すべきではなかった！。明らかにクォリティは低い。カヴァー・アルバムでも作った方がよっぽど良かった。

私にとってバウハウスは今でも世界一のバンドの一つである。
で、この4人が集まったから確かにバウハウスなんだが、うーん…やっぱり違う。
個人的な意見だが、やっつけ仕事に感じる。いや、彼らも喧嘩別れから再結成を経て
「お互い大人になったし、今ならアルバム作っても良い奴出来るんじゃ？」とか、
(インタビューで読んだが)「バウハウスを綺麗に終わらせる必要があった」って言う
理由があるんだろうが…
だが、これなら本作をリリースする意味があったのだろか？という疑問が浮かぶ。
個々の演奏や、彼らのシングルのB面っぽい曲調は昔と変わらないんだが、当時感じた
緊張感が感じられない。
これはもう、バウハウスを「無理やり」終わらせるためにリリースした作品としか
感じられない。
これをバウハウス名義の作品として世に出したのは残念に思えてならない。
(いや、ピーターのソロ名義でも、ラブロケ名義でも残念に思うけどさ)

私にとってバウハウスが衝撃的だったのは、
そのサウンドをバラバラに分解して聞いたとき
稚拙ともいえるワンフレーズが融合し
奇跡的なまでにアーティスティックな曲の骨格が生まれ
そこにメンバー個々の思想と
ピーターの存在感が刻まれた、唯一無二のバンドだったことだった。

二回の再結成をはさんだとはいえ、
最後のオリジナルアルバムからは、２５年もの月日が流れている。

しかし、しかしである。
このバンドはまったくブレることなく、
自分達の最良の部分だけを抽出して
そのキャリアにふさわしいアルバムをここに作り上げた。

最初の２曲を聴いただけで私は体がふるえて涙がでるほど感動した。
