「ガンダーラ」「999」等のヒット曲を経て、改めてこのグループの真価を問われる時期に出されたアルバム。
いわゆる「売れ筋」の曲を並べるのかと思いきや、すごく作りこまれた楽曲が並んでいる。
1曲目「PROGRESS AND HARMONY」、3曲目「SHOCK, SHOCK, SHOCK !」でのコーラスワークの美しさ、4曲目の「TRY TO WAKE UP TO A MORNING」でのタケカワさんの諭すような歌声。
中には一分に満たない短い楽曲もあるけれど、その曲こそがこのアルバムの中ではいいスパイスになっている。
中でも11曲目の「THE SUN IS SETTING ON THE WEST」は、何度きいても鳥肌が立つ。

私は前回のCD選書でゴダイゴの楽曲を知ったけど、今回の紙ジャケ再販でもっとたくさんの人に聞いてもらえたらいいなと思います。

ストーリーコンセプトアルバムは数あれど、物語ではなく１９７０年代の世界の動きを一枚のアルバムにしてしまった・・・こんな発想で作られたアルバムは、たぶん後にも先にもこれだけだろう。
様々なタイプの楽曲を並べて幅広い音楽性を披露しつつ、国家の趨勢や事件を象徴的に描く歌詞世界も見事である。
それぞれの楽曲の解説は、LPで発売された当時のものが復刻されているので、そちらを参照してほしい。

音楽でこんなことも表現できるのだ、という可能性を知らしめてくれた日本音楽史上に残る名盤だ、と思っている。
GODIEGOは「ヒット曲を量産したグループ」というだけでなく、こんなアルバムを作る音楽集団でもあるのだという側面もぜひ知ってほしい。

70年代を一日の時間帯に例えると、夕方でしょうか。美しくもあり、悲しくもあり、夕やけを見ながら素直な気持ちになれる方にぜひお勧めです。社会的であり、自由を求めてやまない70年代を総括した、まさに金字塔的な作品だと思います。ゴダイゴらしく知的に軽やかにまとまっている素晴らしい作品です。
