スターサイクルを聴くとプロレス番組を思い出す。次期シリーズ予告の時この曲にのせて超過激なアナウンスがはいるのだ。いつもワクワクドキドキしながら魅入ったものだ。今から25年程昔のことだ。ジェフの名演といえば哀しみの恋人達やスキャッターブレイン、ブルーウィンドなどが挙げられようが自分にとってはスターサイクルこそがジェフベックそのものなのだ。もちろんワイアードから引き続き参加しているヤンハマーの存在が大きいのは十分承知している。この曲は彼の作品だ。ブローバイブローがギタリストの為のギターアルバムだとすると、本作はロックファンにもポップスファンにも安心して勧められるまさにジェフベックファンの為のアルバムといえよう。ヴォーカル無しのインストアルバムだからって難しく考えなくても大丈夫。きっと楽しく聴くことができるとおもいますよ。

マイルスデイビスバンドで脚光を浴びたギタリスト、ジョンマクラフリン率いるマハヴィシュヌオーケストラやビリーコブハムの「スペクトラム」を聴いて影響を受けたJeff Beckが、BBA解散後に発表した「Blow By Blow」「Wired」。Jeff Beckを代表する2作だが、今作「There And Back」もJeff Beckの感覚的な天才ギターが冴えていて、安定して聴けるアルバムです。ジャケットもセンスがあってとてもかっこいいです。
「Star Cycle」「You Never Know」「The Pump」など、最近のライブでは定番となっている曲が入っているので、必聴です。
　そして、このアルバムは、とても宇宙的な感覚の曲で殆ど占められています。
１、ジェフベックのライヴでは欠かせないほどの重要な曲。
２、ジェフベックのキャリアの中では特に目立たない位置にある曲だが、結構するどいギターが聴ける。
３、ライヴでは欠かせない曲。ヤンハマー作のリフが特にかっこいい。
４、正式には「The Pump」で、重いドラムの一定のリズムにジェフのスペイシーなフレーズが絡む。
５、正式には「El Becko」です。頭の早いクラシックのようなピアノからハードロック調のリフを持った曲。
７、ビリーコブハムの「スペクトラム」の一曲目に収録されている「クアドラント４」に影響を受けて作られた曲でしょう。Jeff Beck自身、テンポをキープしたまま演奏するのが難しいらしく、ライヴでも殆ど取り上げられていません。
８、「Guitar Shop」収録のWhere Were Youにも通ずる感動的な演奏。このようなギターが弾けるのは、後にも先にもジェフベック以外にいないでしょう。
Jeff Beckのスペイシーなサウンドをお楽しみ下さい。
