後の「永遠の序曲」等に比べると、アルバムの完成度は劣るかもしれませんが、彼らの若さや熱気、ロック魂がストレートに伝わってくる作品だと思います。
もちろん彼らの代表曲にふさわしい(と自分で思ってる)曲も収録されています。KANSASはアルバムを出すごとに洗練されていきましたが、彼ら独自の音楽性はこの1stから既に出来上がっています。自信を持ってお奨めします。

アメリカン・プログレ・ハードの代表格カンサスが1974年にリリースしたメジャー・デビュー
作です。
　さてカンサスの魅力と云えば第一にイギリス主体のプログレサウンドにアメリカンロックの
躍動感とわかり易さを取り入れたことでしょう。そして、、
ダブル・ギター、ダブル・キーボードの重層な演奏、バンドの屋台骨を担うフィル・イハート
の骨太なドラミング、聴き手を魅きつけて止まないスティーヴ・ウォルシュの情熱的で艶のあ
る歌声、そしてこれがあるからカンサスサウンドだと云うロビー・スタインハートのヴァイオ
リンでしょう。

何といってもカッコいいのがアルバムの幕開けを飾る必殺チューン「Can I Tell You」だ。
豪放なヴァイオリンの音色で幕を開け一気になだれ込むように聴かせる展開はとかくスピード
感があってカッコいいです。ヴァイオリン、ギター、キーボードと滑らかに移行するソロも
最高です!
「Journey from Mariabronn」の後半でみせる盛大なグルーヴが特筆もので、そこに荒々しさ
はあるものの独自のインテリジェンスも感じさせるスタインハートのヴァイオリンが舞えば
これぞ唯一無二のカンサスサウンドですね。
そして忘れちゃならないのがラストを飾る「Death of Mother Nature Suite」です。後に次々
と大作を創り上げるケリー・リヴグレンの作品でまだプログレ要素こそ薄いものの彼独自の
緊張感みなぎる展開は実にダイナミックかつ爆発的でアルバムラストを飾るにふさわしい秀曲
だ。

全体の完成度を求めるとどうしても「仮面劇」（1975年作）や「永遠の序曲」（1976年作）に
は劣りますが、本作ではとりわけスタインハートのヴァイオリンプレイが光っていて明確に
新しいサウンドを求める精神性が感じられる彼らの原点ですね。タップリその魅力を味わって
みてください。

７４年発表の１ｓｔ。カンサスとしてはほとんど話題にもならず、チャート的にもさしたる成績を残さなかったデビュー作だが、作品のレベルとしては後の大ヒット作と大差は無い。本作では特にヴァイオリンの活躍が目立っており、時に凄まじく、時に哀感を漂わせるその音色に酔いしれるには最適の作品。ハイ・トーンのヴォーカルとコーラス、やや乾いたサウンドとスピード感溢れる演奏はいわゆるアメリカン・プログレの典型であり、楽曲がやや地味な点を除けば、ほぼグループのカラーはこの作品で決定されている。
１．は西海岸風のコーラスとヴァイオリンが印象的な曲。哀感を感じさせるヴォーカルとオルガンは確かにプログレ的だが、どことなくカントリー・フュージョンというおかしな表現を使いたくなる。ヴァイオリンのソロが特に素晴しいが、続けてオルガン・ソロ、ギター・ソロと続き、グループのお披露目的な曲にもなっている。２．は一転してジャズっぽいピアノを中心にした曲。やはりヴァイオリンの凄まじいプレイが印象的。３．はカンサスらしい美しいバラード。この味わいこそカメリカン・プログレ・ハードの一つの典型だと思う。４．はハイ・トーンのヴォーカルとコーラスが印象的な曲。５．は変拍子バリバリのブログレ曲。複雑だが、それを感じさせないのはアメリカのバンドらしい。この演奏を聴けば彼らの実力は一目瞭然だと思う。６．は明るいアメリカン・ポップス調の曲だが、違和感なく収まっている。
