EWFをソウルやファンクのジャンルととらえちゃうと，"Fantasy"から評価が下がっちゃうみたいですよね．でも私はそういうEWFも含めて全部好きです．そういう私でも，やはりNo.1のアルバムはこれでしょうか．同時期にリリースされたライブ「灼熱の狂宴」と共に当時は熱狂的に聴いてましたね．１曲目と２曲目のつながり方は何度聴いてもゾクっとします．
ところでCDではボーナストラックとして変なデモ音源が入ってますが，そんなことしないで「灼熱...」のD面に入っているスタジオ録音曲をこのアルバムに入れて「完全版」を作ってほしいですよね．ちなみに「灼熱...」も種々発表されている「ライブ音源」を再編集すれば完全版ができるはずなのに...残念．もうそこまでコアなファンはいないのでしょうか？

ブラック・ミュージックに見向きもしなかったロック・ファンは多かった。
「I want you以外に言うことあるだろ？」
そんな風に思ってたのは私だけじゃないはず。
当時既に、ジミヘンやスライは過去の人になっていたしP-Funkなど誰も知らなかった。
依然ロックは若者のための音楽として機能していたし、聴く側も「わかりやすい啓蒙」を求めていた時代だった。

そこに現れたのがE.W.& F.だ。
パーカッション担当が３人もいて、全員歌と楽器が上手く、アンサンブルに凝っている大人数のバンドなんて聴いたことがなかった。
しかも彼らは「自分たちが楽しければそれでいい」でもいうように、気持ちのいいメロディーとグルーヴを紡ぎだすのである。
「そうなのだ、小難しい理屈なんていらない、気持ちよければそれでいいのだ！」
バカボンのパパのように私は思った。
あっさり彼らに啓蒙されたのだった。

前置きが長すぎるが、本作は75年に発売された彼らの出世作のリマスター盤である。
バンド全体のまとまりが一個の精神体のようだ。
後にディスコブームに乗って大ヒットアルバムを連発した頃、一種独特の共同体意識を全面に押し出したのも頷ける。
何枚あるかわかならいベスト盤（笑）に収録される名曲が入っている。
私見だが、バラードはこの時期のものが一番好きだ。
尚、今回ついたボーナストラックはあくまでおまけと考えたほうがいい。
歌詞が欲しい人は日本盤を買うこと。
しかし邦題『暗黒の挑戦』って、どういう意味？

数多あるEW&Fのアルバムの中でなぜこのアルバムを買ったか？
それはAfricanoが入っているから。

敢えて声を大にして言おう、EW&Fはインストロメンタルの楽曲にこそ
真価があるのだと！

メローでキャッチーなボーカルナンバーで不動の地位を築いた
グループなのに？？
　確かに。。
って言うか本当に本人達が演奏していたんだっけ？？　
　。。。。

誤解を承知で言おう、それは大した問題じゃあない！
兎にも角にも残されている演奏のクオリティの高さが全てだ。
モーリス・ホワイトは伊達にラムゼイ・ルイスのバックにいたのでは
ないのだ！

改めて最近気に入っているのは”HappyFeelin’”
一気にテンションup間違いなしの一曲だ。
何ともアフリカンなビブラフォンがたまらない！
このベースラインの踊りっぷりを聞いてやってくれ！
ビシッと決まる2拍3連の切れも心地よい！

この’99デジタル･リマスター版では、追加されているボーナス・トラック
も聞き逃せない。
何とも肩の力の抜けたジャムセッションと言った感じの”HappyFeelin’”
本採用Verよりずっと洒落た仕上がりの”That's the Way of the World
(Latin Expredition)”、極めつけの「Jazzy Jam」”Caribou Chaser” 。。

気持ちいいっす！
