1stに聞けるアマチュアパンクは、安にポストパンクとも言い難い、形容しにくい深いサウンドへと変貌をとげている。
エレクトロニクスは今の基準から言うと稚拙だが、当時としては画期的で精巧なレベルだろう。というよりそもそも稚拙さが、ぶっきらぼうで、何とも言えないオンリーな魅力を放っている気がする。
歌詞は示唆的だが抽象的に、淡々と語られる。なぜか聴いているうちに畏怖に似た感情が生まれてくる。

真夜中に、川辺でじっと静かな流れを見ているかのような音楽である。決して柔らかいわけでも、もやもやしているわけでもなく、音は硬質なのだが、なぜかそんな気がしない。

イアンがああいうことになった理由は、発作とか、成功からくる気疲れとか、女性関係とも言われるが（興味深いことに、イアンは不倫相手アニクと肉体関係を一度も持ってはいなかったという）、今もよくわからない。

結局、残ったこの音だけがすべての本質なのかもしれない。
