"Destroy Erase Improve"や"Chaosphere"は好きだったのですが、
それ以降の作品では、彼らの音楽性についていけなくなっていた輩でございます。
この"Obzen"を聴いてみて感じたのは、(1)楽曲の奥が深くなった。よりドラマチックになった。
(2)聴きやすくなった（あくまで”彼らのの作品の中では”、という意味。(1)と関係しているかも）という点です。
傑作の部類に入るのは間違いありません。
"Meshuggah中毒"の方々以外にも広いリスナー層にアピールできる作品、という予感がします。

スウェーデンが誇るハイパー・プログメタルバンド「Meshuggah」（メシュガー）による待望の新アルバムです。2008年発売。2005年にリリースの前作「Catch 33」以来、約3年ぶりの６thにあたります。

前作では1枚のアルバムを何と1曲のみで押し通すという“暴挙”に出た彼らですが、今回は全9曲構成になっているので、それなりにコンパクトで聴きやすくなったかというと、もちろん答えは「否」です。複雑怪奇なポリリズムはさらに混迷の度を強め、西洋とも北欧とも東洋ともカテゴライズ不可能な、無国籍なエクストリーム・メタルサウンドが次から次へと襲いかかってきます。初期の作品で聴かれたヤケクソ的な疾走感は前作あたりから急速に影を潜め、よりテクニカルにより無機質に前人未到の境地へと突進する彼らは、タイトルや意味ありげなジャケットデザインから推測されるように「Zen」（禅）の極みまで達してしまったかのようです。だからといって決して音楽自体が落ち着いてしまったわけではなく、聴く者の神経を次第に麻痺させる劇薬ともいえる破壊力満点のポリリズムは、さらに凄みを増した感がします。ジャンルはまるで違いますが、Mデイヴィスの70年代初頭の代表作「On The Corner」で聴かれた麻薬的かつ宗教的なポリリズムと合い通じるものを感じます。

Aホールズワースばりの浮遊感あふれるプレイを聴かせるリーダー兼リードギターのフレドリック・トーデンダルのプレイは、相変わらず変幻自在で、どこから飛んでくるか予測不可能。反則ワザ満載のギタープレイと唯一無比のポリリズムとの相乗効果は、もはや誰もついてくることができない高みまで達してしまったようです。プログメタルファンは言うに及ばず、変態＆テクニカル系ギター好きのコアな音楽ファンにも強力推薦の1枚です。

来日決定おめでとうございます･･･と言いたいのですが、実際見に行けないのが悲しい(涙)それ程の存在です。すげー人達です。フレデリック氏は鬼才です！(いやぁ、メンバー全員天才ですねｗ)アルバムの感想としては、全体を通して「Chaosphere」に近い流れだと思いますが実験作だった「Catch 33」の無機質なコンセプトを十分反映してると思います。前作よりも断然ソリッドでパワフル、相変わらず変拍子中心の曲ですがグルーヴ感もきっちり出てます。但し、前作と違いドラムソフトによる打ち込みではなくトーマス・ハーケ自身のプレイに戻った為、曲に人間らしさが復活しており一安心のアルバム内容です。
強いて言えば、今後は大昔のイエンス・キッドマンのクリーンボイスを次作にて復活するといいなぁ･･･なんて思うのですが。(無理な注文かｗ)
