   クラシックや現代音楽を学んでいたイルミン・シュミット、ジャッキ・リーヴェツァイト、ミヒャエル・カローリ、ホルガー・シューカイが1968年に結成したジャーマン・プログレ、いまで言うクラウト・ロックの元祖、カン。アメリカ生まれの黒人ヴォーカリスト、マルコム・ムーニー脱退後、日本人ヴォーカリスト、ダモ鈴木を迎え、71年に2枚組としてリリースされた3作目。エレクトロ・サウンドやアコースティック・サウンドが混在する、あまりにも個性的な音楽性は、黒人音楽をルーツとする米英のロックとは明らかに異なるものだった。ジョン・ライドン率いるP.I.L.を経て、現代のトランス・ミュージックにも影響を与えている。（山口智男）

ドイツの現代芸術は第二次大戦で虐げられた歴史からか実験を恐れない風土が有るのか、音楽でも英米とは一味違ったものが多く存在します。そのドイツの雄、CANの中心のHolger Czukayの言葉でこのAlbumを表すのに良いかなと印象的なものを一つ紹介します。

昔「自分の楽器はテープレコーダーと短波ラジオだ」と記事を読み、当時、意味が分からずSEならフロイドが遥か上とか思っていましたが、最近、テープレコーダーを縦横無尽に使う→ポストプロダクションに主点をおいた音楽→クラブ・ミュージックと繋がるのにやっと気付き、約40年前のAlbumなのに現代感覚のある音楽というのがこのAlbumの感想です。

複数のリズムパートの抜き差しでの複雑なリズム、テープ速度の操作、逆再生、ループ、音の破片のコラージュと、今でこそ主流の音楽の技法「カットアップ」を完全に先取りしており、そこが当時の英米の音楽にある頭から終わりまで一環で演奏したノリやテクニック重視の音楽と違って感じるのでしょう。

きっとプログレというより、リミックス、マッシュアップ、ダブといった現代のクラブ音楽の耳で聴いてこそ2000年代として正当な評価が出る、そんな人工と肉感の狭間にある醒めた音楽と思います。

私も最初は嫌いでしたが年を経て聴き直したくなり、いつしか何度か買い直しています。今では「Halleluhwah」が耳から離れなくなり、スタイリッシュなこの曲の中毒からは、おそらく抜け出す事は無さそうです。

現代音楽、フリージャズ、サイケデリア、歌謡曲…それぞれのメンバーが持ち寄った様々な影響が、驚くべき自然さで結晶した稀有なロックバンドCANの、問題作である本作は、めちゃくちゃカッコイイ前半と、なにがなにやら？？？な後半があいまって、消化不良を起こしそうですが、聴き込めば聴き込むほどハマる危険なアルバム。リーベツァイトのドラムの、単調なようでいて豊饒なリズムが、長い曲を長く感じさせません。後半ちょっとアヴァンギャルドになるので、引いちゃうかもしれませんが、1960〜1980年代のドイツのロックバンドで、退屈さを感じさせないのは、ひょっとしたらCANだけかも知れません。ダモ鈴木の数少ない日本語の歌が聴けるのも、CANのレギュラー・アルバムではコレだけ。

　74年にリリースされたCANの通算3枚目のアルバム。当初は１枚もので出す予定だったが製作を進めていくうちに２枚組として出されたもの。
　彼らの最高傑作といわれる5枚目の『Future Days』とあわせて、ロック史に残る名盤としてこの『Tago Mago』も必須で聴いて欲しいアルバム。アナログ時代の独盤というと高くてなかなか欲しくても手に入らないものだったが、現在はUS盤のCDも出ていて容易に手に入るようですし聴けるうちに聴いてほしい。
　名曲「Mushroom」や部分的に日本語で歌われる「Oh Yeah」などのカッコイイ曲から前衛的、民族音楽的な要素の大きいアナログ時代はレコードの片面全てを占めていた「Aumgn」や「Peking O」などまでどれも外せない傑作。
