メンバーが誰とか、ジャケットがダサイとか、これまでのレビューにはうんざりだ。
おかげでこのアルバムを聴くまでに相当遠回りをしてしまった。
「Valse Hot」をまず試聴してみてほしい。
メランコリックなメロディーにグっと来るはず。各々のソロを経て、最後は涙の大円団。

大切な人にプレゼントしたい一枚。しかし、ジャケットがダサイから却下！

ブラウン＝ローチ・クインテットと同様のメンバーだが、レーベルの関係からかロリンズがリーダーにクレジットされている。56年といえばブラウン死の年であり、ロリンズはサキ・コロ収録の年でもある。ハード・バップがいよいよ本格化し、東海岸が活気を取り戻した頃でもある。ロリンズはベイズン・ストリートよりものびのびとした演奏を聞かせ、ブラウンと見事な掛け合いを演じている。特にユーモラスなバルス・ホット、キス・アンド・ランでのコンビネーションは爽快感を覚える。「胸に歌があふれ」、「眠れぬ夜は」でも快調なソロを聴かせてくれる。ロリンズが自らの演奏に対する真理を見出し、自信を持って突き進んでいく姿勢を示しつつある。ブラウンの死は多くのものに無常観を与え、そのショックから立ち直るのに多くの時間を費やさざるを得なかった。それだけに、ここに残された貴重な録音は、モダン・ジャズの遺産として生き続けていくのだ。
