英混交詞の中の、時にアンドロジーニアスでもある日本語による女
言葉も(無意識かもしれないが)妙に刺さる。ジェイムズ・イハの繊

彗星のように突然現れた新人、LEO今井のメジャー・ファースト・アルバム。
エキゾチックで艶やかな、最近ではあまりいなくなったタイプの新人である。

この作品に限らず彼の作品はニューウェイヴとロックを取り込んだシティ・ポップスというのが
個人的に感じた印象。また歌い方に関してもかなり独特というか個性的で
ちょっとひきつったような変わった歌い方なのだ。最近TVやラジオで流れてることもあるが
CDでちゃんと聴くとますますその強い個性を感じることが出来る。

そして楽曲に関しても彼独自の世界が展開している。まず日本語と英語を組み合わせた
タイプの詞を描いているのだが日本語詞のセンスがとにかく凄い。
よくこんな言葉を普通に使うなあ！というような大胆な言葉選びが目を引く。
サウンドに関しては、とにかくメロ重視というか、淡々としたA〜Bメロから一気に
サビで爆発するタイプの曲が多い。特に「I will know your name」という曲が象徴的。
また「karaoke」という曲ではサビで「え？」と思うような言葉が出てきたりする。
歌詞カードを読むのもこのCDの楽しみの一つになっていると思う。
　またサウンドワークは前述のような感じだが全体的に重厚で聴き応えのあるアレンジに
なっている。ど真ん中のロックではないが、ロック好きもこれは好きになると思うし
もちろんポップス好きにもアプローチ出来る作品に仕上がっている。

個人的に「Metro」という曲の混沌とした感じが好み。この曲は結構異色なロックナンバーで、
それもそのはずあのZAZEN BOYSのメンバーとタッグを組んだ曲なのだ。
これがまた彼の世界観と見事にあっていて、非常にいいコラボになったかと。
ちなみにこの曲の歌詞に出てくる「有楽町の女郎花〜」というフレーズがお気に入り。

LEO今井は若い世代には斬新に惹きこまれるだろうし、
ある境の世代からは少し懐かしいカルチャーを感じ
己の退化した耳により、あまり「良い」とは思えないのかもしれない。
ＺＡＺＥＮ色は否めないが、むしろＺＡＺＥＮ路線を
好きな人間がＺＡＺＥＮよりも今井というミュージシャン単体を
面白いと捉えられるかがこの作品の真価ではないだろうか。

東京を軸とし、そこを彷徨う人間や環境と実に見事なまでの
妖しさ、今井ならではの言葉遊びは決してサウンドとともに
ただのお遊びや自己満足に収まっていないところが
随所に見られる事だ。したがって、１聴しただけではわからないため
じっくり浸透させる時間も必要になるので、そこが今に本当に珍しい人だ。
メジャーにしてのこの位置、もちろん既に発売されている「Metoro」
等では一瞬聴いただけでとうに耳を盗まれた者も
多いのだが、カテゴリー、言語、国籍は問わない
随分と可愛いと思える新鋭であり、他のミュージシャン
では許せない部分も、ＬＥＯ今であるがゆえに
許せてしまう。このように小出しされていく才覚を
潰すも潰さないも今後に関わってくるだろう。
例えばプリンスが音楽界に登場した時のような
ものを感じる。しかし、それはただの８０年代
懐古というわけじゃないのが、ＬＥＯ今井の
バックボーンだったりする。「凄い」とは書けない。
「素晴らしい」と現時点では耳がそう応えている。
