このCDの1曲目「ロンリー・ウーマン」が何人の人の音楽観や人生を変えてしまったのでしょうか。譜面を超えたリズムやピッチのゆらぎ，合わないような合っているようなユニゾン，本当に奇妙で魅力的な曲です。ドン・チェリーらの「オールド・アンド・ニュー・ドリームス」，高柳昌行氏のソロ・アルバム，ジョン・ゾーン，大友良英氏らの再演を聴くにつけこの曲に対するミュージシャンたちの思い入れの強さを感じます。ほかの曲もメロディアスで小鳥が羽ばたくようであったり，小魚がはね回るようであったり，ジャズを超えて，「音楽」を聴く喜びを与えてくれます。

1959年5月22日、ハリウッドで録音。新しいサウンドを求めていた当時のジャズ界に『フリー・ジャズ』の中心的存在として登場したオーネット・コールマンの代表的な作品として名高い。

そして今聴くと不思議なことに最も有名な『淋しい女』よりも、むしろ『イヴェンチュアリー』より後の曲の方が興味深い。なぜなら独特のフレージングの取り方と和音の展開、リズムが後続の有能なミュージシャンたちの根っこになっていると思えるからだと思う。代表的なのがパット・メセニーで、彼のギターのフレージングの多くはオーネットのそれに多大な影響を受けている。ある意味アルト・サックスで実行された音楽を、ギターに弾き直し、発展させたものがパット・メセニーの音楽の根底にあると思えてくる。

それはパットに限らない。ここで競演しているドン・チェリーにしてもチャーリー・ヘイデンにしても色濃く、オーネット・コールマンの独特な触感を受け継いでいる。そういう観点からもジャズ史上最重要アルバムの一つと言えるだろう。

ジャズを聴き始めた高校の頃、マイルスやアート・ブレイキー、コルトレーンというお決まりのアイドルにはまり、すごく気にはしつつも敬遠していたのがオーネット・コールマンであった。もちろん彼がモダン・ジャズの最大のイノベーターの一人であることは知っていたし、コルトレーンやドルフィーのフリーキーな演奏にも親しんでいたので、興味がないわけではなかった。最初に聞いたオーネットはそのドルフィーらとの文字通り「フリージャズ」というアルバムで、ジャクソン・ポロックらしき作品がジャケットに使用されていた点も、当時美術に進もうと決めていた僕にとって親近感を抱かせるものであった。しかし意外にも、アトランティックのこのデビュー作は聞く機会がないまま、ロンリーウーマンという名曲の存在ともども幻のアルバムとして心の隅にあり続けた。そして、おそらく３０代半ばくらいに初めて聴いたとき、これがフリージャズの旗頭となったオーネットの問題作なのかと、少々驚かされた。新しさがないというのではなく、想像以上に美しく、やさしい音楽だと思った。そしてそこから発せられたフリー<無調>という概念の鮮烈さの意味が少しわかり、以前から漠然と思っていたフリージャズという概念に対する疑問が氷解したのであった。無調であるということが「でたらめ」ということではなく、既成のコード、リズム、メロディという要素の枠を新たな概念や規範によって再構成することという、いわば当然のことが実感できたのだ。美術にもいえることであるが、具象的な絵画しか絵だと思っていない人にとって抽象絵画が、でたらめに見えるように無調やモードでさえも、いやもっといえば通常のインプロビゼーションすら「わけがわからん」という精神の埒外に飛んでしまうのだろう。この音楽との出会いが、また一つ豊かな世界を知らせしめたのだ。オーネットに感謝したい。
