　ベートーヴェンの晩年の作品、とりわけ、弦楽四重奏や変奏曲を聴いていると、あの、モナリザの微笑に似たような、謎に満ちた部分がいくつもある。おなじ作曲家が「ヴァルトシュタイン」であるとか、あの主題が何度も繰り返しすべての楽章で展開され、最後に力強い凱旋歌となる交響曲第５番を書いたとは想像できないような、ある楽章では変奏が展開され、それが単純な楽想のなかで終わるような音楽、つまり、ピアノソナタ３２番のような音楽を作っている。
　こんど、このゼルキンの最晩年の演奏会の録音を聴いていて、まず思い浮かんだのは、Tous les arts vivent de paroles.というヴァレリーがコローの絵について書いた文章の言葉だ。「あらゆる芸術は言葉を持っている」と訳すことができるが、このゼルキンの弾くベートーヴェンの音楽、演奏が持つ言葉はけして饒舌ではなく、控え目で、荒削りなものがいくつもあるけれども、ゼルキンの弾くベートーヴェンの３２番、単純な主題がいくつもの変奏となってクライマックスを築き、やがて、静かな終わりを迎える第２楽章、ここにはバックハウスの演奏よりもたっぷりとした情感があり、まずそこにわたしは魅了された。このソナタだけでなく、この録音の音楽の言葉はこんなふうに、言葉は多くないけれど、そこに発せられる言葉はどれも真摯で優しく、そして演奏する喜びがある。こういう演奏を何十年という歳月をピアノを弾くことに費やした老人が奏でている。これこそ、ある知恵が到達した知恵の極点ではないだろうか、そんなすばらしい音楽を聴くことができるのは幸福なことである。
