作品129(ライナーの作品番号表記に誤りあり)のチェロ協奏曲が1997年3月、ニューヨーク、アーツ・センター・コンサート・ホールで、残りが。1999年12月ブリュッセルで録音。シューマンの作品を集めたアルバムだが、ピアノとチェロのデュオ演奏とチェロ協奏曲という両極端な世界を同時に楽しめる珍しい作品集になっている。

マイスキーとアルゲリッチが組むとマイスキー側に比重がよってとても穏やかな演奏になる。これにギドン・クレーメルが加わると一挙に神経質な要素が加わり、アルゲリッチのピアノもマイスキーのチェロも大きく変化して、火がついたような演奏になる。ショスタコーヴッチのピアノ・トリオの第2楽章が良い例だ。ぼくはこの3人がライヴで演奏を繰り広げる組み合わせが最も好きだが、このアルバムのように優美な世界も嫌いではない。

チェロ協奏曲はバーンスタインとウィーン・フィルで吹き込んで以来、2度目の録音だが小編成のオーケストラが効果的でぼくはこちらの演奏の方が好きだ。
