1988年11月の収録です。レナード・バーンスタインが1990年に鬼籍に入られたので、その2年前ですから、最晩年ということになります。1957年にニューヨーク・フィルの音楽監督に迎えられて以来30年以上、多くの音楽を創り出してきたこの組み合わせですから、この録音も素晴らしい出来栄えでした。
晩年ですので、テンポは彼にしては遅めですが、ロシア音楽特有のどこか暗く厳しい音楽を、その情熱でもってダイナミックに表現する様は他の指揮者にはない個性の輝きを感じます。

哀愁に満ちた第2楽章のテーマを聴くたびにこのような美しい旋律とハーモニーを創り出した作曲家に拍手を送りたい気分になりました。ロマンティックな部分の美しさは、他にない夢のような気分をもたらしてくれます。オーケストラが揺れるような感覚が伝わってきましたし、表現しながら音楽にのめり込むレニーの姿が見えるような演奏です。管も弦もとてもよく鳴っています。ビルトオーゾ集団ですし、レニーの音楽感に寄り添い、目指す高みを共有できている音楽でした。

「運命交響曲」とも言われています。各楽章で聴くことの出来る重い主題こそ、作曲当時のチャイコフスキーの鬱々とした気分を表わしているようです。この翳りと華やかさとが同居しているところが、彼の音楽の素晴らしさなのでしょう。夢と現実の狭間での人間の苦しみや悩みが、音楽から如実に浮かび上がり感じとることができます。

第3楽章のワルツも壮大な展開を示していますし、第4楽章も含めてバーンスタインのように、作曲者の意図する思いを明確にかつ荘厳に演奏すれば拍手喝采となります。

カップリングの「幻想序曲<ロメオとジュリエット>」は1989年10月に収録されたものです。

バーンスタインの演奏は色々聞いていますが、
やはり派手な曲のほうが合っていると思います。
まさにこの５番はバーンスタインの腕の見せ所。
映像などを見てもわかりますがとにかく熱い演奏。
熱気が伝わってくるようです。
