最近、ツィンマーマンの盤が絶賛されるようですが、その完成度・精緻さは十分評価できます。彼の、ベートーヴェン、ブラームスのコンチェルトは文句なく名演だと思いますが、ショパンのコンチェルトは、バックのオーケスラの甘美さとは異なり、ピアノソロは幾分クールで、頭で考えて練り上げた演奏のように感じます（ショパンのバラード集はとても良い演奏ですが）。その点、このアルゲリッチの演奏は、冷静に聴いたら、楽譜そっちのけの自由奔放さと、細部の仕上げが気になるでしょうが（特に1番）、理屈を超えたショパンの真髄が感覚的に完璧に表現されています。とかく腕の立ちすぎるピアニストですが、ゆったりと歌わせるいくつかの主題に、甘さ、はかなさ、そしてなんとも言えない色気が伝わってきて、そこが最大の魅力です。過去にも、現代にも名演はありますが、このアルゲリッチの20代後半から30代半ばの全盛期の録音は、その録音の質からいっても第1の定番として持っておいて後悔することはありません。

1番は、ショパンコンクール優勝時の演奏の方が個人的にはアルゲリッチのベスト演奏だと思っている。決してアバド&ロンドン交響楽団が悪いわけではないが、1楽章と3楽章は途中からアルゲリッチがノリノリになってテンポがつかめなくなってしまう。そこはオケがよく付いていっていると思う。良くも悪くもアルゲリッチらしい演奏だろう。

2番はロマンチックで良かった。美しさ、華やかさを強く感じた。ロストロポーヴィチがうまくコントロールしているのか、アルゲリッチにしては珍しく落ち着いた演奏で、ピアノとオケがうまくかみ合っている。

第1番がアバドと1968年2月ロンドン、タウン・ホールで、第2番がロストロポーヴィチと1978年1月ワシントン、J・F・ケネディ・センターで録音。アルゲリッチがショパン・コンクールで優勝したのが1965年なので、この2つの録音を同じように論じるのは無理があると思える。むしろ注目すべきは、ロストロポーヴィチで、1970年 社会主義を批判した作家アレクサンドル・ソルジェニーツィンを擁護したことによりソビエト当局から「反体制」とみなされ、以降、国内演奏活動を停止させられ、外国での出演契約も一方的に破棄される。1974年 2年間のビザを取得して出国し、そのまま亡命。1977年 アメリカ合衆国へ渡り、ワシントン・ナショナル交響楽団音楽監督兼首席常任指揮者。1978年 ソビエト当局により国籍剥奪というすさまじい時期に当たっている。その中での演奏である。

ロストロポーヴィチが故郷を愛してやまなかったことは間違いない。1990年にここでのワシントン・ナショナル交響楽団を率いて、ゴルバチョフ体制のソ連に凱旋公演し国籍回復したことからみても明白だ。体制への強い気持ちを音楽に昇華させて演奏していると思えるこの第2番協奏曲は、既にプロとして13年のキャリアを経て円熟したアルゲリッチのピアノとともに『強い意思』を具現化していると思う。

この時代のソ連の演奏家・作曲家は皆、なんらかの阻害を体制から受けていた。その中で最も強く行動したのがロストロポーヴィチだったと思う。そして音楽もまた『意思』である、とこの演奏は教えてくれる。
