もともとクラシックを聴いたことがなかった私ですが、先輩の薦めで購入し聴きだしました。クライバーのベートーベンでは4番と7番が有名だそうですが、私はこの5番の第4楽章がものすごく好きです。3楽章から4楽章へ移るときの鳥肌の立つような盛り上がり方は言葉では言い尽くせません。以来他の指揮者と聞き比べ、改めてクライバーの指揮の凄味を感じています。このほかにも私の知らない素晴らしい音楽がたくさんあると思うと楽しくてしょうがありません。クラシックを普段聞かない方も是非一度試聴してみてください。

　一世を風靡したウイーンの名指揮者エーリッヒ・クライバー（1890ー1956年）はベートーヴェンをこよなく愛し得意としていた。５番＆６番のカップリングはいまも歴史的な名盤として記録されている。その子、カルロス・クライバー（1930ー2004年）はベルリン生まれ、ブエノスアイレス育ちで、「親子鷹」ながら父はカルロスが指揮者になることを強く反対したと伝えられる。
　カルロスは父の使った総譜を研究し尽くして指揮台に上がったようだが、この５番＆７番は、没後約２０年後、父もここで名盤を紡いだ同じウイーン・フィルとの宿命の録音（1974、1976年）であり、余人の理解の及ばぬ、父を超克せんとする＜格闘技＞的な迫力にあふれている。同時期、ベルリン・フィルではその疾走感、音の豊饒さである意味共通するカラヤンの名演もあるが、明解すぎるほどメリハリの利いた解釈とオペラでしばしば聴衆を堪能させた弱音部での蕩けるような表現力ではカラヤンを凌いでいると思う。
　父を終生意識しながら、その比較を極端に嫌ったカルロスが、結果的に父と比類したか、あるいは超えたかはリスナーの判断次第だが、この特異な名演が生まれた背景は、エーリッヒとの関係なしには語られないのではないかというのが小生の管見である。

一音一音に感情がこもる、素晴らしい演奏です。
伝説的な指揮者による演奏という先入観も
聴き初めにはあったのですが、簡単に吹き飛ばされました。

特に5番の第2楽章。
何百回と別の演奏家で聞いているにも関わらず、
別の曲か？と思わせるほどのみずみずしさがありました。

7番の第4楽章に至ってはいうまでもありませんが、
神々しさを通り越して宇宙の果てまで行ってしまうのでは
というぐらいの迫力です。

指揮者が余程の確信をもたないと、これほどの演奏は生まれないでしょう。
作曲家もこの演奏なら納得するだろう・・・
と思わせる人類の宝です。
