'75年 Brinsley Scwarz解散後、それまでの所属ﾚｰﾍﾞﾙで有ったU.AからNickさんだけは契約を解除されずに縛られていた。そんな状況が嫌で、U.Aから「首を切られる様なｼﾝｸﾞﾙを出そう！」と製作したのがﾀｰﾀﾝﾎｰﾄﾞ名義の#18であのﾍﾞｲｼﾃｨﾛｰﾗｰｽﾞ賛歌で有った。Nickさんにしてみればｷﾂｲｼﾞｮｰｸだったのだが、これが日本でかなり売れてしまった。次作のﾃﾞｨｽｺ賛歌 Lets's Go To The DiscoでU.A側も
ようやく痺れを切らし解雇。

晴れて自由の身と成ったNickさんは英ｲﾝﾃﾞｨﾚｰﾍﾞﾙのはしりとなるStiffより第一弾ｼﾝｸﾞﾙ#20/6を発表。ｽﾋﾟｰﾄﾞ感溢れる素晴らしい出来だ。次のEPは当時ﾃﾞﾋﾞｯﾄﾞ･ﾎﾞｳｲがLowを発表したのに対抗して#9収録のBowiを発表。次次作ｼﾝｸﾞﾙ#16 は静寂の中に狂気の闇が広がる怪作となった。
'77年のStiff/ﾉｰﾃｨﾘｽﾞﾑﾂｱｰからは後のRockpileの面々から成る#11を収録。この頃 ｺｽﾃﾛ/ﾀﾞﾑﾄﾞ/ﾌﾟﾘﾃﾝﾀﾞｰｽﾞ/ｸﾞﾗﾊﾑ・ﾊﾟｰｶｰ等のﾌﾟﾛﾃﾞｭｰｽも行っている。ｺﾞｰﾌｨﾝ/ｷﾝｸﾞ作 '61年のﾋｯﾄ曲のｶﾊﾞｰをA面に据えた#17/21を発表後、'78年にﾏﾈｰｼﾞｬｰのｼﾞｪｲｸ・ﾘﾋﾞｪﾗが設立したﾚｰﾀﾞｰへ移籍 1stｱﾙﾊﾞﾑとなる本作を発表。Coolで毒の有る最良のPops集と成った。ﾋﾞｰﾄﾙｽﾞのｱﾋﾞｰﾛｰﾄﾞをﾊﾟﾛﾃﾞｨ化した部分も含め茶目っ気たっぷりの名盤で#1からして「金の為に音楽をやっている」だからねぇ〜#2 Funkyなﾘｽﾞﾑｷﾞﾀｰに乗ったﾙｰﾓｱのﾎﾞﾌﾞｱﾝﾄﾞﾘｭｰｽによる遊び心満点のPが聞ける。#5はﾌﾞﾘﾝｽﾞﾚｰのﾗｽﾄｱﾙﾊﾞﾑをﾌﾟﾛﾃﾞｭｰｽしてからの盟友 Dave Edmundsを感激させたくて創った曲。ｺｰﾗｽの重ね方といい、ｴｺｰ処理といいﾃﾞｲﾌﾞの影響絶大で間奏に出てくるｱｺｷﾞも効果的。Popの黄金律を兼ね備えた泣ける名曲。#7ではBob Dylanの「見はらし台からずっと」の一行が詩に盛り込まれている。#8は謎のｱﾒﾘｶ人ｼﾝｶﾞｰ/ｼﾞﾑﾌｫｰﾄﾞの曲。Nickさんはこの人が好きで以前　ﾌﾞﾘﾝｽﾞﾚｰ時代にもｶﾊﾞｰしている。#19はﾌﾞﾘﾝｽﾞﾚｰ終末期にｲｱﾝｺﾞﾑと共作した曲で、ほのぼのとした雰囲気が好ましいｵﾘｼﾞﾅﾙ版。（演奏もﾌﾞﾘﾝｽﾞﾚｰ）後にDaveにてﾘｱﾚﾝｼﾞされ2ndに収録され、現在ｶﾗｵｹにも有る程　大ﾋｯﾄするのは周知の事実。

過去の音楽を見据えて未来を創造して行くPopの名盤です。是非！聞いてねぇ〜

尚　本CD内に封入されているｺｰﾄﾞを 発売元のYep Rock RecordsのHPへ登録後の初期画面へ入力すると！本CDには未収録の"Truth Drug" "Keep It Out Of Sight"の2曲が無料DL出来ます！やるぜ〜　Yep Rock!　（但し　この2曲は過去にﾚｱ集 "The Wilderness Years"に収録されているので、有り難味はあまり無いが未聴の方には嬉しいﾌﾟﾚｾﾞﾝﾄだすなぁ〜）

７８年発表の１ｓｔ。この作品を初めて聴いた時の感動を未だに忘れられない。この作品は自分の音楽感を完全に変えてしまった。この作品と次作『Labour of Lust』そしてコステロの『MY AIM IS TRUE』は私の人生において絶対に欠けてはならないものだと思う。当時２０代後半のおっさんであったロウがブリンズリーでやっていた緩めのアメリカン・ロックをこの作品ではバッサリと捨てて、バリバリのニューウェイヴ・サウンドに激甘なメロディを乗せて作ったのがこのアルバム。語弊もあるかもしれないが、ビートルズ meets ニュー・ウェイヴって感じだろう。パワー・ポップなる音楽は拡大してしまっていて時代によって全然違った表情を見せるが、この作品こそがビュアなパワー・ポップだと言い切りたい。彼にしてみても本作以降、徐々にパワー・ポップから離れていきパプ・ロックに戻っていってしまうため、この作品の眩しさは言葉で表すことが不可能なくらいだ。もし聴いていない人は出来るだけ早く聴くべきだと思う。これほどワクワクする音楽はないと思う。

さて今回の再発ではたくさんのボーナス・トラックが付くようだが、往年のファンには目新しいものはなさそうだ。１４．と１８．は以前のＣＤにも追加収録されていた。そして１３．以外は４枚組のボックス・セットに入っていたもの。そのボックスに入っていなかった１３．は元々編集盤『Bunch of Stiff』に提供されていたもので現在はロウの編集盤『WILDERNESS YEARS』に含まれている。ちなみに１９．は聞けば分かるが、ブリンズリー時代の未発表アルバムからのもので、ヴォーカルを取り直して若干のミックス違いになっているようだ。
あとは West-Side-Soul さんのレビューが参考になると思う。久々にカラオケへ行ってみるかな。

別の人がレビューで英米のタイトルを混同しているので指摘しておきます。
（追伸：私の指摘から二日ほど後にその方のレビューは削除されていました。よって普通の商品情報としてよければ参考にしてください。）
英国のタイトルが"Jesus of Cool"で米国版が"Pure Pop for Now People"です。
当時も今も宗教（特にキリスト教）に敏感（非寛容）な米国では"Jesus"を使用することには抵抗があり、当時のアメリカでの発売元のColumbiaがタイトルの変更（と曲目の入れ替え）をしたのです。詳しくは本商品のライナーノーツを見てください。
なので、今回のリイシューの形態は英国オリジナル盤どおりです。再発レーベルはアメリカがYep Roc、イギリスがProperですが、両方同じ商品と考えて頂いて結構です。歌詞が掲載されていないのが残念です。デジパック仕様で、開くと十字架の形に広がるという、とても皮肉の効いた体裁になっています。さらにYep Roc盤には嬉しいオマケもついてきます。（英盤は未確認）
