2008 album from the legendary Ringo Starr, his first album of new recordings with Capitol/EMI since 1974. 12 new tracks, written and produced by Ringo Starr and Dave Stewart, and "refers to the section of Liverpool where I used to live," explains Ringo. "The song was actually Dave Stewart's idea, as a mini autobiographical travelogue: 'I was a sailor first' and then, 'Liverpool I left you' - because I did. 'but I never let you down,' which is true."

'92年の"TIME TAKES TIME"以降ハズレ無しで快作を連発するリンゴ。中でもこの"LIVERPOOL 8"は近い将来ソロ初期の"RINGO"('73),"GOODNIGHT VIENNA"('74)と並び称されるであろう、後期(？)の傑作！と言い切ってしまいましょう！
今作でも、いつものリンゴ組とも言える"ROUNDHEADS"がバックを務めています。しかし、前作までのような豪華ゲストの参加は無くRINGO with THE ROUNDHEADSのアルバムと言える仕上がりは潔く、清々しさを感じさせます。又、前作までプロデューサー兼任だったマークハドソンが今作ではギターを始めとする演奏とソングライティングに専念しておりプロデュースは初顔のデイヴステュアートが全面的に担当しM1'LIVERPOOL 8',M5'GONE ARE THE DAYS'ではソングライティングにも加わっています。
それが功を奏したのか前作に、そこはかと無く漂っていたマンネリ感が払拭され、M1'LIVERPOOL 8'を初めて聴いた際に感じられた、前作までとは明らかに違う音の質感には68才にして新境地を開いた"NEW RINGO"の姿に熱心なリスナーなら胸が熱くなるはずです。
そしてRINGOの半生と故郷リバプールへの思いを唄ったそのM1.は何度聴いてもウルっと来ます。更にそれはジョン、ジョージを始め、ローリーストーム、マルエヴァンス、ニルソン、ビリープレストン、キースムーン、ニッキーホプキンス、マークボラン、リックダンコ、ジョンエントウィッスルetc.etc.の今は亡き多くの友人達へのレクイエムのようにも心に響きます。
又、ちょっとジャジーなニルソンに捧げたM8'HARRY'S SONG'、スパニッシュな哀感を湛えたM9'PASODOBLES'等も今までに無かった新機軸を打ち出しアルバムをバランスの良い作品とするアクセントとして大きな効果を上げています。
又ビートリーなテイストはM3'FOR LOVE'のメロディー,M7,'TUFF LOVE'のメロディー、コーラス、サイケなSE(ドラミングには珍しくブラシを使用)、M11'LOVE IS'のアレンジ等に聴かれます。中でもM11では"JULIA"や"DEAR PRUDENCE"、"LOOK AT ME"的なギターのアルペジオ+"THE FOOL ON THE HILL"を思わせるストリングス、特に曲後半の左チャンネルからアルペジオ、右チャンネルからストリングスが流れる部分はジョン＆ポールがリンゴを"LITTLE HELP"しているような粋なアレンジになっています。
と言う訳でビートルズファンはもちろんマスト！又、一般のロックファンやベスト盤"PHOTOGRAPH"を聴いて「これからオリジナルアルバムを聴いてみよう」と考えている方にも安心してお勧めしたい一枚です。
