既存のディズニーのジャズアレンジコンピには、原曲の雰囲気を大切にしすぎた結果、「これなら原曲聴くよ」と思ってしまうものがありますが、このアルバムはそれを見事に打ち崩した傑作です。
これほどディズニーものとして定番な名曲をセレクトしながら、それを材料に各ミュージシャンが好き勝手やっており、普通のジャズコンピとしてもかなりレベルの高いものになっています。
ジャケットが若干可愛すぎるかも知れませんが、中身はハード。
「ディズニーとジャズ」という題材に惹かれた人なら、間違いなく満足する名盤だと思います。

ディズニーの音楽、特に古い時代のアニメのものの主題歌や挿入歌は、昔からジャズミュージシャンによってカバーされてきた。いやそもそもハリウッドのジャズミュージシャンやスタジオミュージシャンによって録音されてきたわけで、こうしたジャズのコンピというのは別に珍しいものではない。
このコンピが新鮮に見えるのは、Nicola ConteであるとかFCQと言った、この数年のいわゆるクラブジャズのシーンを牽引してきた人達にカバーを依頼したことだろう。結果として、クールでスタイリッシュなサウンドのトラックが多いアルバムとなった。これでニコラやFCQの知名度がより多くの一般の人に伝わるだろう。でも同時に彼らの古くからのファンの間で「こういう人達の音楽知ってる俺達って洒落てるだろ」みたいなイメージが失われる可能性も否定できない。「な〜んだコイツらこんな売れ線仕事受けるワケ？」と思われるリスクが非常に高いとどうしても考えてしまう。少なくとも私はそう感じたし、いわゆるnu jazzのムーヴメントはこれで終わると直感した。クラブミュージックというのがパーティピープルのものだと言うならこれでもいいのか、という気もする。DJブースでこのジャケットを引っ張り出すっていうのは見た感じイケてるとは私には思えない。

演奏のグレードは極めて高いし、今風なお洒落な音はしてる。でも今書いたような理由があり、個人的には極めて複雑な気分です。
